Las aventuras de Sherlock Holmes
The Adventure of the Beryl Coronet
Capítulo 11, Página 23
"You'll
excuse
me
for
starting
without
you,
Watson,"
he
said,
"but
remember
our
client
has
an
early
appointment
this
morning."
"It's
after
nine
now,"
I
said.
"I
wouldn't
be
surprised
if
that's
him.
I
thought
I
heard
the
doorbell."
It
was
indeed
our
friend,
the
financier.
I
was
shocked
by
how
much
he
had
changed.
His
face,
usually
broad
and
strong,
was
now
thin
and
tired,
and
his
hair
seemed
a
bit
whiter.
He
walked
in
with
a
tiredness
that
was
more
painful
than
his
anger
the
day
before
and
sank
heavily
into
the
armchair
I
pushed
forward
for
him.
"I
don't
know
what
I've
done
to
deserve
such
trials,"
he
said.
"Just
two
days
ago,
I
was
a
happy
and
successful
man,
without
a
care.
Now
I'm
left
alone
and
dishonored.
One
sorrow
follows
another.
My
niece,
Mary,
has
left
me."
"Left
you?"
"Yes.
This
morning,
her
bed
hadn't
been
slept
in,
her
room
was
empty,
and
a
note
was
on
the
hall
table.
Last
night,
I
told
her,
in
sadness
not
anger,
that
if
she
had
married
my
son,
things
might
have
been
better
for
him.
Maybe
it
was
thoughtless
of
me.
She
mentions
that
in
her
note:"
"'MY
DEAREST
UNCLE,—I
feel
I've
brought
trouble
upon
you,
and
if
I
had
acted
differently,
this
terrible
misfortune
might
never
have
happened.
I
can't,
with
this
thought,
ever
be
happy
under
your
roof
again,
so
I
must
leave
you
forever.
Don't
worry
about
my
future;
it's
taken
care
of.
And
please
don't
search
for
me,
as
it
will
be
in
vain
and
won't
help
me.
In
life
or
death,
I
am
always
your
loving,"
"'MARY.'"
