Las aventuras de Sherlock Holmes
The Adventure of the Copper Beeches
Capítulo 12, Página 17
"You
might
find
it
a
bit
disjointed,
I'm
afraid,
and
the
events
might
not
seem
connected.
On
my
first
day
at
the
Copper
Beeches,
Mr.
Rucastle
took
me
to
a
small
outhouse
near
the
kitchen
door.
As
we
approached,
I
heard
the
sharp
sound
of
a
chain
and
the
noise
of
a
large
animal
moving
around."
"‘Look
in
here!’
said
Mr.
Rucastle,
showing
me
a
gap
between
two
planks.
‘Isn't
he
a
beauty?’"
"I
looked
through
and
saw
two
glowing
eyes
and
a
vague
shape
in
the
dark."
"‘Don’t
be
scared,’
said
my
employer,
laughing
at
my
reaction.
‘It’s
only
Carlo,
my
mastiff.
I
call
him
mine,
but
really
old
Toller,
my
groom,
is
the
only
one
who
can
handle
him.
We
feed
him
once
a
day,
and
not
too
much,
so
he’s
always
eager.
Toller
lets
him
loose
every
night,
and
God
help
anyone
he
catches.
For
goodness’
sake,
don’t
ever
step
over
the
threshold
at
night,
or
it
could
cost
you
your
life.’"
"The
warning
was
serious.
Two
nights
later,
I
looked
out
my
bedroom
window
at
two
in
the
morning.
It
was
a
beautiful
moonlit
night,
and
the
lawn
was
bright
like
day.
I
stood
there,
enjoying
the
scene,
when
I
noticed
something
moving
under
the
copper
beeches.
As
it
came
into
the
moonlight,
I
saw
it
was
a
giant
dog,
as
big
as
a
calf,
with
a
tawny
coat,
hanging
jowls,
and
a
black
muzzle.
It
walked
slowly
across
the
lawn
and
disappeared
into
the
shadows.
That
dreadful
guard
chilled
me
more
than
any
burglar
could."
"Now,
I
have
a
strange
experience
to
share.
I
had
cut
my
hair
in
London
and
placed
it
at
the
bottom
of
my
trunk.
One
evening,
after
the
child
was
in
bed,
I
started
examining
the
furniture
in
my
room
and
rearranging
my
belongings.
There
was
an
old
chest
of
drawers,
with
the
two
top
ones
empty
and
open,
but
the
bottom
one
was
locked.
I
had
filled
the
first
two
with
my
clothes,
and
I
was
annoyed
not
to
use
the
third
drawer.
I
thought
it
might
be
locked
by
mistake,
so
I
tried
my
keys.
The
first
key
fit
perfectly,
and
I
opened
the
drawer.
There
was
only
one
thing
inside,
and
you
would
never
guess
what
it
was.
It
was
my
coil
of
hair."
"I
picked
it
up
and
examined
it.
It
was
the
same
color
and
thickness.
But
then
I
realized
it
was
impossible.
How
could
my
hair
be
locked
in
the
drawer?
With
trembling
hands,
I
opened
my
trunk,
took
everything
out,
and
found
my
own
hair
at
the
bottom.
I
compared
the
two,
and
they
were
identical.
Wasn't
it
extraordinary?
I
couldn't
make
sense
of
it.
I
put
the
strange
hair
back
in
the
drawer
and
said
nothing
to
the
Rucastles,
feeling
guilty
for
opening
a
locked
drawer."
"I
am
naturally
observant,
as
you
may
have
noticed,
Mr.
Holmes,
and
soon
I
had
a
good
idea
of
the
whole
house's
layout.
However,
one
wing
seemed
uninhabited.
A
door
facing
the
one
leading
to
the
Tollers'
quarters
opened
into
this
area,
but
it
was
always
locked.
One
day,
as
I
was
going
upstairs,
I
met
Mr.
Rucastle
coming
out
with
keys
in
his
hand.
He
looked
different,
not
like
the
cheerful
man
I
knew.
His
face
was
red,
his
brow
was
furrowed
with
anger,
and
veins
stood
out
on
his
temples.
He
locked
the
door
and
hurried
past
me
without
a
word
or
glance."
