Las aventuras de Sherlock Holmes
The Adventure of the Copper Beeches
Capítulo 12, Página 18
"This
made
me
curious,
so
when
I
went
for
a
walk
with
my
charge,
I
walked
around
to
see
the
windows
of
that
part
of
the
house.
There
were
four
windows
in
a
row,
three
dirty
and
one
with
shutters.
They
seemed
deserted.
As
I
walked
back
and
forth,
glancing
at
them,
Mr.
Rucastle
came
out,
looking
as
cheerful
as
ever."
"‘Ah!’
he
said,
‘I
hope
you
don’t
think
I
was
rude
for
not
speaking
earlier,
my
dear
young
lady.
I
was
busy
with
work
matters.’"
"I
assured
him
I
wasn’t
offended.
‘By
the
way,’
I
said,
‘you
seem
to
have
quite
a
few
spare
rooms
up
there,
and
one
has
shutters.’"
"He
looked
surprised
and,
I
thought,
a
little
startled
by
my
comment."
"‘Photography
is
one
of
my
hobbies,’
he
said.
‘I’ve
made
my
darkroom
up
there.
But,
dear
me!
What
an
observant
young
lady
we
have
here.
Who
would
have
thought
it?’
He
spoke
jokingly,
but
his
eyes
showed
no
humor.
I
saw
suspicion
and
annoyance."
"Well,
Mr.
Holmes,
once
I
realized
there
was
something
about
those
rooms
I
wasn’t
supposed
to
know,
I
was
eager
to
explore
them.
It
wasn’t
just
curiosity,
though
I
have
plenty
of
that.
It
felt
like
a
duty,
like
something
good
might
come
from
it.
They
talk
about
a
woman’s
instinct;
maybe
that’s
what
it
was.
I
was
keenly
watching
for
any
chance
to
enter
the
forbidden
door."
"Yesterday,
that
chance
came.
Besides
Mr.
Rucastle,
both
Toller
and
his
wife
had
tasks
in
those
deserted
rooms,
and
I
once
saw
him
carrying
a
large
black
linen
bag
through
the
door.
Recently,
he
had
been
drinking
heavily,
and
yesterday
evening
he
was
very
drunk.
When
I
went
upstairs,
I
found
the
key
in
the
door.
I
was
sure
he
left
it
there.
Mr.
and
Mrs.
Rucastle
were
downstairs
with
the
child,
giving
me
the
perfect
opportunity.
I
gently
turned
the
key,
opened
the
door,
and
slipped
inside."
"There
was
a
small
passage
in
front
of
me,
without
wallpaper
or
carpet,
which
turned
at
a
right
angle.
Around
the
corner
were
three
doors
in
a
line;
the
first
and
third
were
open.
They
led
into
empty,
dusty
rooms
with
two
windows
in
one
and
one
in
the
other,
so
dirty
that
the
evening
light
barely
came
through.
The
middle
door
was
closed,
and
across
it
was
a
broad
iron
bar,
padlocked
at
one
end
to
a
ring
in
the
wall
and
tied
with
strong
cord
at
the
other.
The
door
was
also
locked,
and
the
key
was
missing.
This
barred
door
matched
the
shuttered
window
outside,
yet
I
could
see
light
coming
from
under
it,
probably
from
a
skylight.
As
I
stood
there,
staring
at
the
door
and
wondering
about
its
secret,
I
suddenly
heard
footsteps
inside
and
saw
a
shadow
move
past
the
dim
light
under
the
door.
A
mad,
unreasoning
terror
rose
in
me,
Mr.
Holmes.
My
nerves
failed,
and
I
ran
as
if
a
dreadful
hand
was
grabbing
my
dress.
I
rushed
down
the
passage,
through
the
door,
and
straight
into
Mr.
Rucastle's
arms,
who
was
waiting
outside."
