Las aventuras de Sherlock Holmes
The Red-Headed League
Capítulo 2, Página 23
“Please
be
quieter!”
Holmes
said
seriously.
“You’re
risking
our
mission’s
success.
Could
you
sit
on
one
of
those
boxes
and
not
interfere?”
Mr.
Merryweather
sat
on
a
crate,
looking
very
upset.
Holmes
got
down
on
his
knees
and,
using
a
lantern
and
magnifying
glass,
examined
the
cracks
between
the
stones.
After
a
few
seconds,
he
stood
up
and
put
the
glass
in
his
pocket.
"We
have
at
least
an
hour,"
Holmes
said.
"They
won't
do
anything
until
the
pawnbroker
is
asleep.
Then,
they'll
work
quickly
to
have
more
time
to
escape.
We
are
in
the
cellar
of
a
major
London
bank.
Mr.
Merryweather
is
the
chairman,
and
he
can
explain
why
criminals
are
interested
in
this
cellar
now."
"It's
because
of
our
French
gold,"
whispered
Mr.
Merryweather.
"We've
been
warned
that
someone
might
try
to
steal
it."
"Your
French
gold?"
asked
Holmes.
"Yes.
A
few
months
ago,
we
borrowed
30,000
napoleons
from
the
Bank
of
France.
People
know
we
haven't
unpacked
it,
and
it's
still
in
our
cellar.
The
crate
I'm
sitting
on
contains
2,000
napoleons
packed
with
lead
foil.
Our
bullion
reserve
is
larger
than
usual,
and
the
directors
are
worried."
"And
rightly
so,"
said
Holmes.
"Now,
let's
make
our
plans.
In
an
hour,
things
will
happen.
Meanwhile,
Mr.
Merryweather,
cover
the
lantern
with
the
screen."
"And
sit
in
the
dark?"
asked
Mr.
Merryweather.
