Las aventuras de Sherlock Holmes
The Red-Headed League
Capítulo 2, Página 22
“Tonight,
you’ll
play
for
higher
stakes
and
more
excitement,”
said
Sherlock
Holmes.
“For
you,
Mr.
Merryweather,
it’s
about
£30,000;
for
you,
Jones,
it’s
the
man
you
want
to
catch.”
“John
Clay,
the
murderer,
thief,
and
forger.
He’s
young
but
top
of
his
field.
I’d
rather
catch
him
than
any
criminal
in
London.
John
Clay
is
remarkable.
His
grandfather
was
a
royal
duke,
and
he
went
to
Eton
and
Oxford.
He’s
smart
and
tricky.
We
see
signs
of
him
everywhere
but
never
find
him.
One
week
he’s
in
Scotland,
the
next
he’s
raising
money
for
an
orphanage
in
Cornwall.
I’ve
chased
him
for
years
and
haven’t
seen
him
yet.”
“I
hope
to
introduce
you
to
him
tonight.
I’ve
dealt
with
John
Clay
before,
and
he’s
at
the
top
of
his
game.
It’s
past
ten,
so
we
should
start.
You
two
take
the
first
hansom;
Watson
and
I
will
follow
in
the
second.”
Sherlock
Holmes
didn’t
talk
much
during
the
long
drive.
He
lay
back
in
the
cab,
humming
tunes
from
the
afternoon.
We
drove
through
many
gas-lit
streets
until
we
reached
Farrington
Street.
“We’re
close
now,”
my
friend
said.
“Merryweather
is
a
bank
director,
so
he
cares
about
this.
I
thought
Jones
should
come
too.
He’s
not
bad,
though
a
bit
silly
in
his
job.
But
he’s
brave
and
won’t
let
go
once
he
catches
someone.
Here
we
are,
and
they’re
waiting
for
us.”
We
arrived
at
the
same
busy
street
from
the
morning.
We
dismissed
the
cabs
and
followed
Mr.
Merryweather
through
a
narrow
passage
and
a
side
door
he
opened.
Inside
was
a
small
corridor
ending
in
a
strong
iron
gate.
He
opened
it,
leading
us
down
winding
stone
steps
to
another
gate.
Mr.
Merryweather
lit
a
lantern
and
took
us
down
a
dark
passage,
then
through
a
third
door
into
a
large
vault
filled
with
crates
and
boxes.
“You’re
safe
from
above,”
Holmes
said,
holding
up
the
lantern
and
looking
around.
“And
from
below,”
said
Mr.
Merryweather,
tapping
the
floor
with
his
stick.
“It
sounds
hollow!”
he
said,
surprised.
