Las aventuras de Sherlock Holmes
The Man with the Twisted Lip
Capítulo 6, Página 5
It
was
hard
to
refuse
Sherlock
Holmes'
requests
because
they
were
always
so
clear
and
confident.
I
felt
that
once
Whitney
was
in
the
cab,
my
task
was
almost
done.
I
could
not
wish
for
anything
better
than
to
join
my
friend
in
one
of
those
unusual
adventures
that
were
normal
for
him.
In
a
few
minutes,
I
wrote
my
note,
paid
Whitney's
bill,
led
him
to
the
cab,
and
watched
it
drive
away
into
the
darkness.
Soon,
a
shabby
figure
came
out
of
the
opium
den,
and
I
was
walking
down
the
street
with
Sherlock
Holmes.
For
two
streets,
he
walked
with
a
bent
back
and
unsteady
steps.
Then,
he
looked
around
quickly,
stood
up
straight,
and
started
laughing
loudly.
"I
suppose,
Watson,"
he
said,
"you
think
I've
added
opium-smoking
to
cocaine
injections
and
all
the
other
little
habits
you've
told
me
your
medical
opinions
about."
"I
was
certainly
surprised
to
find
you
there."
"But
not
more
than
I
was
to
find
you."
"I
came
to
find
a
friend."
"And
I
came
to
find
an
enemy."
"An
enemy?"
"Yes,
one
of
my
natural
enemies,
or
maybe
I
should
say,
my
natural
prey.
Briefly,
Watson,
I'm
in
the
middle
of
a
very
unusual
investigation,
and
I
hoped
to
find
a
clue
in
the
ramblings
of
those
drunkards,
as
I
have
before.
If
I
had
been
recognized
in
that
den,
my
life
wouldn't
have
been
safe
for
an
hour.
I've
used
it
before
for
my
own
purposes,
and
the
rogue
Lascar
who
runs
it
has
sworn
to
take
revenge
on
me.
There's
a
trap-door
at
the
back
of
that
building,
near
the
corner
of
Paul's
Wharf,
which
could
tell
strange
stories
of
what
has
gone
through
it
on
moonless
nights."
