Las aventuras de Sherlock Holmes
The Adventure of the Speckled Band
Capítulo 8, Página 30
Holmes
had
brought
a
long
thin
cane,
which
he
placed
on
the
bed
beside
him.
Next
to
it,
he
put
a
box
of
matches
and
a
candle
stump.
Then
he
turned
down
the
lamp,
and
we
were
left
in
darkness.
How
will
I
ever
forget
that
dreadful
night?
I
couldn't
hear
a
sound,
not
even
breathing,
yet
I
knew
my
companion
was
sitting
open-eyed,
just
a
few
feet
from
me,
in
the
same
state
of
nervous
tension
as
I
was.
The
shutters
blocked
all
light,
and
we
waited
in
complete
darkness.
From
outside,
we
heard
an
occasional
night
bird's
cry,
and
once,
right
at
our
window,
a
long
catlike
whine,
telling
us
the
cheetah
was
indeed
free.
In
the
distance,
we
heard
the
deep
tones
of
the
parish
clock,
which
chimed
every
quarter
of
an
hour.
How
long
those
quarters
seemed!
Twelve
struck,
then
one,
two,
and
three,
and
still,
we
waited
silently
for
whatever
might
happen.
Suddenly,
a
light
flickered
near
the
ventilator
and
then
disappeared.
A
strong
smell
of
burning
oil
and
hot
metal
followed.
Someone
had
lit
a
dark-lantern
in
the
next
room.
I
heard
a
soft
movement,
but
then
it
was
silent
again,
though
the
smell
got
stronger.
I
waited
for
half
an
hour,
listening
carefully.
Then
I
heard
a
gentle
sound,
like
steam
escaping
from
a
kettle.
As
soon
as
we
heard
it,
Holmes
jumped
from
the
bed,
lit
a
match,
and
hit
the
bell-pull
with
his
cane.
"Do
you
see
it,
Watson?"
he
shouted.
"Do
you
see
it?"
But
I
saw
nothing.
When
Holmes
lit
the
match,
I
heard
a
low
whistle.
The
sudden
light
hurt
my
tired
eyes,
so
I
couldn't
see
what
Holmes
was
hitting.
However,
I
noticed
his
face
was
very
pale
and
filled
with
horror.
He
stopped
hitting
and
looked
at
the
ventilator.
Suddenly,
the
night
was
filled
with
a
terrible
scream.
It
got
louder
and
louder,
a
mix
of
pain,
fear,
and
anger.
People
in
the
village
and
even
in
the
parsonage
heard
it.
It
chilled
us
to
the
bone.
I
looked
at
Holmes,
and
he
looked
at
me,
until
the
last
echo
faded
away.
"What
does
it
mean?"
I
asked,
shocked.
"It
means
it's
all
over,"
Holmes
said.
"And
maybe
it's
for
the
best.
Take
your
pistol,
and
let's
go
to
Dr.
Roylott's
room."
