Las aventuras de Sherlock Holmes
The Adventure of the Noble Bachelor
Capítulo 10, Página 26
"Please,
don't
apologize
to
me,"
Lord
St.
Simon
replied
bitterly.
"I
know
I've
treated
you
badly
and
should
have
talked
to
you
before
leaving.
But
I
was
so
confused,
and
from
the
moment
I
saw
Frank
again,
I
lost
control
of
my
actions
and
words.
I'm
surprised
I
didn't
faint
right
there
at
the
altar."
"Perhaps,
Mrs.
Moulton,
you'd
like
my
friend
and
me
to
leave
the
room
while
you
explain?"
"If
I
may
say,"
the
gentleman
interjected,
"there's
been
too
much
secrecy
already.
Personally,
I'd
like
everyone
to
know
the
truth."
He
was
a
small,
wiry
man,
sunburnt,
clean-shaven,
with
a
sharp
face
and
alert
demeanor.
"I'll
tell
our
story
now,"
the
lady
said.
"Frank
and
I
met
in
'84
at
McQuire's
camp
near
the
Rockies,
where
my
father
was
working
a
claim.
Frank
and
I
got
engaged,
but
then
my
father
struck
it
rich,
while
Frank's
claim
failed.
As
Pa
grew
richer,
Frank
grew
poorer,
and
eventually,
Pa
wouldn't
let
the
engagement
continue,
taking
me
to
'Frisco.
Frank
wouldn't
give
up,
though,
and
followed
me
there,
seeing
me
in
secret.
It
would
have
only
angered
Pa
if
he
knew,
so
we
made
our
own
plans.
Frank
promised
to
make
his
fortune
and
not
return
for
me
until
he
matched
Pa's
wealth.
I
vowed
to
wait
for
him
and
not
marry
anyone
else
while
he
lived.
'Why
not
marry
now?'
he
asked,
'so
I
can
be
sure
of
you,
but
I
won't
claim
to
be
your
husband
until
I
return.'
We
discussed
it,
and
he
had
everything
arranged,
even
a
clergyman
ready,
so
we
married
then
and
there.
Frank
went
off
to
seek
his
fortune,
and
I
returned
to
Pa."
"I
next
heard
Frank
was
in
Montana,
then
Arizona,
and
later
New
Mexico.
Then
a
newspaper
reported
a
miners'
camp
attack
by
Apache
Indians,
listing
Frank
among
the
dead.
I
fainted
and
was
ill
for
months.
Pa
thought
I
was
declining
and
took
me
to
many
doctors
in
'Frisco.
For
over
a
year,
I
heard
nothing,
convinced
Frank
was
dead.
Then
Lord
St.
Simon
came
to
'Frisco,
we
moved
to
London,
and
a
marriage
was
arranged.
Pa
was
delighted,
but
I
knew
no
one
could
replace
Frank
in
my
heart."
"Still,
if
I
had
married
Lord
St.
Simon,
I
would
have
been
a
dutiful
wife.
We
can't
control
our
feelings,
but
we
can
control
our
actions.
I
went
to
the
altar
determined
to
be
as
good
a
wife
as
possible.
But
imagine
my
shock
when,
just
as
I
reached
the
altar,
I
glanced
back
and
saw
Frank
in
the
first
pew,
watching
me.
At
first,
I
thought
he
was
a
ghost,
but
there
he
was,
looking
at
me
with
a
question
in
his
eyes,
asking
if
I
was
happy
or
sad
to
see
him.
I
nearly
fainted.
Everything
spun
around,
and
the
clergyman's
words
buzzed
like
a
bee
in
my
ear.
I
was
torn.
Should
I
stop
the
ceremony
and
cause
a
scene?
When
I
looked
again,
he
gestured
for
me
to
stay
quiet.
He
scribbled
a
note,
and
as
I
passed
by,
I
dropped
my
bouquet
to
him.
He
returned
it
with
the
note,
asking
me
to
join
him
when
he
signaled.
I
knew
my
first
duty
was
now
to
him,
and
I
resolved
to
follow
his
lead."
"When
I
returned,
I
told
my
maid,
who
knew
him
from
California
and
was
always
his
friend.
I
instructed
her
to
remain
silent
and
pack
a
few
things,
including
my
coat.
I
knew
I
should
have
spoken
to
Lord
St.
Simon,
but
it
was
too
difficult
with
his
mother
and
all
those
people.
I
decided
to
run
away
and
explain
later.
Within
ten
minutes
at
the
table,
I
saw
Frank
across
the
street.
He
gestured
to
me
and
walked
into
the
Park.
I
slipped
out,
dressed,
and
followed.
A
woman
approached,
talking
about
Lord
St.
Simon—seemed
like
he
had
his
secrets
too—but
I
managed
to
escape
and
catch
up
with
Frank.
We
took
a
cab
to
lodgings
he
had
in
Gordon
Square,
and
that
was
my
real
wedding
after
years
of
waiting.
Frank
had
been
a
prisoner
of
the
Apaches,
escaped,
returned
to
'Frisco,
learned
I'd
thought
him
dead
and
gone
to
England,
and
finally
found
me
on
the
morning
of
my
second
wedding."
