Las aventuras de Sherlock Holmes
The Adventure of the Beryl Coronet
Capítulo 11, Página 23
"You'll
excuse
me
for
starting
without
you,
Watson,"
he
said,
"but
remember
our
client
has
an
early
appointment
this
morning."
"Why,
it's
after
nine
now,"
I
replied.
"I
wouldn't
be
surprised
if
that
were
him.
I
thought
I
heard
a
ring."
Indeed,
it
was
our
financier
friend.
I
was
shocked
by
how
he
had
changed;
his
broad
and
solid
face
was
now
thin
and
sunken,
and
his
hair
seemed
a
shade
whiter.
He
entered
with
an
exhaustion
and
lethargy
even
more
painful
than
his
previous
anger,
and
he
dropped
heavily
into
the
armchair
I
pushed
forward
for
him.
"I
don't
know
what
I've
done
to
be
so
severely
tested,"
he
said.
"Only
two
days
ago,
I
was
a
happy
and
successful
man
without
a
care.
Now
I'm
left
in
a
lonely
and
dishonored
old
age.
One
sorrow
follows
another
closely.
My
niece,
Mary,
has
left
me."
"Left
you?"
"Yes.
Her
bed
wasn't
slept
in
this
morning,
her
room
was
empty,
and
a
note
for
me
was
on
the
hall
table.
Last
night,
I
told
her,
sadly
and
not
angrily,
that
if
she
had
married
my
son,
things
might
have
been
better
for
him.
Perhaps
it
was
thoughtless
of
me
to
say
so.
She
refers
to
that
remark
in
this
note:"
"'MY
DEAREST
UNCLE,—I
feel
I've
caused
you
trouble,
and
if
I
had
acted
differently,
this
terrible
misfortune
might
never
have
happened.
I
can't,
with
this
thought,
ever
be
happy
under
your
roof
again,
and
I
feel
I
must
leave
you
forever.
Don't
worry
about
my
future,
for
it's
provided
for;
and,
above
all,
don't
search
for
me,
as
it
will
be
a
fruitless
effort
and
a
disservice
to
me.
In
life
or
death,
I
am
always
your
loving,"
"'MARY.'"
