Las aventuras de Sherlock Holmes
The Adventure of the Copper Beeches
Capítulo 12, Página 25
"My
God!"
he
cried.
"Someone
has
let
the
dog
loose.
It
hasn’t
been
fed
for
two
days.
Quick,
quick,
or
it’ll
be
too
late!"
Holmes
and
I
ran
out
and
around
the
corner
of
the
house,
with
Toller
hurrying
behind
us.
There
was
the
huge,
starving
beast,
its
black
muzzle
buried
in
Rucastle’s
throat,
while
he
writhed
and
screamed
on
the
ground.
I
ran
up
and
shot
it,
and
it
fell
over
with
its
sharp
white
teeth
still
sunk
into
the
folds
of
his
neck.
With
great
effort,
we
separated
them
and
carried
him,
alive
but
terribly
injured,
into
the
house.
We
laid
him
on
the
drawing-room
sofa,
and
after
sending
the
now
sober
Toller
to
inform
his
wife,
I
did
what
I
could
to
ease
his
pain.
We
were
all
gathered
around
him
when
the
door
opened,
and
a
tall,
gaunt
woman
entered
the
room.
"Mrs.
Toller!"
cried
Miss
Hunter.
"Yes,
miss.
Mr.
Rucastle
let
me
out
when
he
returned
before
going
up
to
you.
Ah,
miss,
it’s
a
shame
you
didn’t
tell
me
what
you
were
planning,
for
I
would
have
told
you
your
efforts
were
in
vain."
"Ah!"
said
Holmes,
looking
sharply
at
her.
"It
seems
Mrs.
Toller
knows
more
about
this
matter
than
anyone
else."
"Yes,
sir,
I
do,
and
I’m
quite
willing
to
tell
you
what
I
know."
"Then
please,
sit
down,
and
let
us
hear
it,
as
there
are
several
points
I
must
admit
I
still
don’t
understand."
"I’ll
soon
make
it
clear
to
you,"
she
said.
"And
I
would
have
done
so
earlier
if
I
could
have
gotten
out
of
the
cellar.
If
there’s
any
legal
trouble
over
this,
remember
that
I
was
the
one
who
stood
by
you,
and
I
was
Miss
Alice’s
friend
too."
