Las aventuras de Sherlock Holmes
The Boscombe Valley Mystery
Capítulo 4, Página 5
I
shook
my
head.
“Many
men
have
been
hanged
with
far
less
evidence,”
I
remarked.
“So
they
have.
And
many
have
been
wrongfully
hanged.”
“What
is
the
young
man’s
own
version
of
events?”
“It’s
not
very
encouraging
for
his
supporters,
though
it
has
a
few
suggestive
points.
You’ll
find
it
here;
you
may
read
it
yourself.”
He
took
out
a
copy
of
the
local
Herefordshire
paper
and,
after
unfolding
it,
pointed
to
the
paragraph
where
the
young
man
had
given
his
account.
I
settled
in
the
corner
of
the
carriage
and
read
it
carefully.
It
said:
“Mr.
James
McCarthy,
the
only
son
of
the
deceased,
gave
evidence
as
follows:
‘I
had
been
away
for
three
days
in
Bristol
and
returned
on
the
morning
of
Monday,
the
3rd.
My
father
wasn’t
home
when
I
arrived,
and
the
maid
told
me
he
had
gone
to
Ross
with
John
Cobb,
the
groom.
Soon
after,
I
heard
his
trap
in
the
yard
and
saw
him
get
out
and
walk
away
quickly,
though
I
didn’t
know
where
he
was
going.
I
took
my
gun
and
walked
towards
Boscombe
Pool,
intending
to
visit
the
rabbit
warren
on
the
other
side.
On
my
way,
I
saw
William
Crowder,
the
gamekeeper,
who
thought
I
was
following
my
father,
but
I
didn’t
know
he
was
ahead
of
me.
About
a
hundred
yards
from
the
pool,
I
heard
“Cooee!”—a
usual
signal
between
my
father
and
me.
I
hurried
and
found
him
by
the
pool.
He
seemed
surprised
to
see
me
and
asked
roughly
what
I
was
doing
there.
We
argued,
almost
coming
to
blows,
for
he
had
a
violent
temper.
Seeing
his
anger
rise,
I
left
and
headed
back
to
Hatherley
Farm.
I
hadn’t
gone
more
than
150
yards
when
I
heard
a
terrible
cry
behind
me,
causing
me
to
run
back.
I
found
my
father
dying
on
the
ground,
his
head
badly
injured.
I
dropped
my
gun
and
held
him,
but
he
died
almost
instantly.
I
knelt
beside
him
for
a
few
minutes,
then
went
to
Mr.
Turner’s
lodge-keeper,
his
house
being
nearest,
to
ask
for
help.
I
saw
no
one
near
my
father
when
I
returned
and
don’t
know
how
he
got
his
injuries.
He
wasn’t
popular,
being
cold
and
unfriendly,
but
as
far
as
I
know,
he
had
no
enemies.
I
know
nothing
more
of
the
matter.’”
“The
Coroner:
Did
your
father
say
anything
before
he
died?”
“Witness:
He
mumbled
a
few
words,
but
I
only
caught
something
about
a
rat.”
