Las aventuras de Sherlock Holmes
The Man with the Twisted Lip
Capítulo 6, Página 4
“So
I
am.
But
you’ve
got
it
wrong,
Watson,
for
I’ve
only
been
here
a
few
hours,
three
pipes,
four
pipes—I
forget
how
many.
But
I’ll
go
home
with
you.
I
wouldn’t
want
to
frighten
Kate—poor
little
Kate.
Give
me
your
hand!
Do
you
have
a
cab?”
“Yes,
I
have
one
waiting.”
“Then
I’ll
go
in
it.
But
I
must
owe
something.
Find
out
what
I
owe,
Watson.
I’m
all
out
of
sorts.
I
can’t
do
anything
for
myself.”
I
walked
down
the
narrow
passage
between
the
double
row
of
sleepers,
holding
my
breath
to
avoid
the
vile,
stupefying
fumes
of
the
drug,
and
looked
for
the
manager.
As
I
passed
the
tall
man
by
the
brazier,
I
felt
a
sudden
tug
at
my
coat,
and
a
low
voice
whispered,
“Walk
past
me,
and
then
look
back
at
me.”
The
words
were
clear
in
my
ear.
I
glanced
down.
They
could
only
have
come
from
the
old
man
beside
me,
yet
he
sat
now
as
absorbed
as
ever,
very
thin,
very
wrinkled,
bent
with
age,
an
opium
pipe
dangling
between
his
knees
as
if
it
had
dropped
from
his
fingers
in
sheer
exhaustion.
I
took
two
steps
forward
and
looked
back.
It
took
all
my
self-control
not
to
cry
out
in
surprise.
He
had
turned
his
back
so
that
only
I
could
see
him.
His
form
had
filled
out,
his
wrinkles
were
gone,
the
dull
eyes
had
regained
their
fire,
and
there,
sitting
by
the
fire
and
grinning
at
my
surprise,
was
none
other
than
Sherlock
Holmes.
He
made
a
slight
motion
for
me
to
approach
him,
and
instantly,
as
he
turned
his
face
half-round
to
the
company
once
more,
he
subsided
into
a
doddering,
loose-lipped
senility.
“Holmes!”
I
whispered,
“what
on
earth
are
you
doing
in
this
den?”
"As
quietly
as
you
can,"
he
replied.
"I
have
excellent
hearing.
If
you
could
kindly
send
away
that
drunken
friend
of
yours,
I
would
be
very
pleased
to
have
a
little
chat
with
you."
"I
have
a
cab
waiting
outside."
"Then
please
send
him
home
in
it.
You
can
trust
him;
he
seems
too
tired
to
cause
trouble.
I
suggest
you
also
send
a
note
with
the
cab
driver
to
your
wife,
saying
you’re
staying
with
me.
If
you
wait
outside,
I’ll
join
you
in
five
minutes."
