Las aventuras de Sherlock Holmes
The Adventure of the Engineer's Thumb
Capítulo 9, Página 6
"It's
clear
that
you've
had
quite
an
unusual
experience,
Mr.
Hatherley,"
he
said.
"Please,
lie
down
and
make
yourself
comfortable.
Share
what
you
can,
but
stop
if
you're
tired
and
keep
your
strength
with
a
little
drink."
"Thank
you,"
my
patient
replied,
"but
I
feel
like
a
new
man
since
the
doctor
bandaged
me,
and
your
breakfast
seems
to
have
completed
the
cure.
I'll
take
up
as
little
of
your
valuable
time
as
possible,
so
I'll
begin
my
story
right
away."
Holmes
sat
in
his
large
armchair
with
a
tired,
heavy-lidded
look
that
hid
his
sharp
and
eager
nature,
while
I
sat
across
from
him.
We
listened
in
silence
to
the
strange
tale
our
visitor
recounted.
"You
should
know,"
he
began,
"that
I
am
an
orphan
and
a
bachelor,
living
alone
in
a
London
apartment.
I
work
as
a
hydraulic
engineer
and
gained
significant
experience
during
the
seven
years
I
apprenticed
with
Venner
&
Matheson,
a
well-known
firm
in
Greenwich.
Two
years
ago,
after
completing
my
apprenticeship
and
inheriting
a
decent
sum
from
my
late
father,
I
decided
to
start
my
own
business
and
rented
professional
chambers
on
Victoria
Street."
"I
suppose
everyone
finds
their
first
independent
venture
in
business
a
bit
bleak.
For
me,
it's
been
particularly
so.
In
two
years,
I've
had
three
consultations
and
one
small
job,
and
that's
all
my
profession
has
brought
me.
My
total
earnings
amount
to
£27
10s.
Every
day,
from
nine
in
the
morning
until
four
in
the
afternoon,
I
waited
in
my
small
office,
until
I
began
to
lose
hope
and
believed
I'd
never
have
any
practice
at
all."
"Yesterday,
however,
just
as
I
was
about
to
leave
the
office,
my
clerk
informed
me
that
a
gentleman
was
waiting
to
see
me
about
business.
He
handed
me
a
card
with
the
name
'Colonel
Lysander
Stark'
engraved
on
it.
The
colonel
himself
followed
closely,
a
man
slightly
taller
than
average
but
extremely
thin.
I've
never
seen
anyone
so
thin.
His
face
tapered
into
his
nose
and
chin,
and
his
cheek
skin
was
tightly
stretched
over
his
prominent
bones.
Yet,
this
thinness
seemed
natural,
not
due
to
illness,
as
his
eyes
were
bright,
his
steps
brisk,
and
his
demeanor
confident.
He
was
plainly
but
neatly
dressed,
and
I
guessed
his
age
to
be
closer
to
forty
than
thirty."
"'Mr.
Hatherley?'
he
said
with
a
slight
German
accent.
'You've
been
recommended
to
me,
Mr.
Hatherley,
as
someone
not
only
skilled
in
your
profession
but
also
discreet
and
capable
of
keeping
a
secret.'"
I
bowed,
feeling
as
flattered
as
any
young
man
would
by
such
praise.
"May
I
ask
who
gave
me
such
a
good
recommendation?"
