Las aventuras de Tom Sawyer
Capítulo 5, Página 1
At
half-past
ten,
the
church
bell
rang.
People
came
for
the
morning
sermon.
The
children
sat
with
their
parents.
Aunt
Polly
came.
Tom,
Sid,
and
Mary
sat
with
her.
Tom
sat
next
to
the
aisle.
He
was
far
from
the
window.
Many
people
came
in.
The
postmaster,
the
mayor
and
his
wife,
and
the
justice
of
the
peace
came.
Widow
Douglas
came
too.
She
was
nice
and
kind.
Major
and
Mrs.
Ward
came.
Lawyer
Riverson
came.
The
village
belle
came
with
other
young
girls.
Young
clerks
came
last.
Willie
Mufferson
came
with
his
mother.
He
always
helped
her.
The
mothers
liked
him.
The
boys
did
not
like
him.
He
was
too
good.
He
had
a
white
handkerchief.
Tom
did
not
have
one.
Tom
thought
boys
with
handkerchiefs
were
snobs.
Everyone
was
in
the
church
now.
The
bell
rang
again.
It
was
quiet.
Only
the
choir
whispered
and
laughed.
The
choir
always
did
this.
There
was
once
a
choir
that
did
not.
But
it
was
a
long
time
ago.
I
do
not
remember
where.
The
minister
read
a
hymn.
He
read
it
with
feeling.
His
voice
went
up
and
down.
"Shall
I
be
carried
to
the
skies,
on
flow'ry
beds
of
ease,"
"Whilst
others
fight
to
win
the
prize,
and
sail
thro'
bloody
seas?"
People
thought
he
read
well.
At
church
events,
he
read
poetry.
The
ladies
loved
it.
They
could
not
find
words.
It
was
too
beautiful.”
After
the
hymn,
Mr.
Sprague
gave
notices.
He
read
many
meetings
and
events.
It
was
a
long
list.
This
is
a
strange
custom.
It
is
still
done
in
America.
It
is
hard
to
stop
old
customs.
Now
the
minister
prayed.
It
was
a
long
prayer.
He
prayed
for
the
church,
children,
village,
and
country.
He
prayed
for
the
President
and
sailors.
He
prayed
for
people
in
other
lands.
He
asked
for
good
words.
He
wanted
them
to
help
people.
Amen.
