Las aventuras de Tom Sawyer
Capítulo 12, Página 4
“A
lot.
If
he
had
one,
she’d
burn
him
out
herself!
She’d
roast
him
like
he
was
a
person!”
Aunt
Polly
felt
bad.
She
saw
things
differently
now.
Maybe
she
was
being
cruel,
too.
She
felt
sorry
and
her
eyes
watered.
She
put
her
hand
on
Tom’s
head
and
said
softly:
“I
wanted
the
best
for
you,
Tom.
And
it
helped
you.”
Tom
looked
at
her
with
a
small
smile.
“I
know
you
wanted
the
best,
aunty,
and
I
did
with
Peter.
It
helped
him,
too.
I
never
saw
him
move
so
fast.”
“Oh,
go
on,
Tom,
before
you
upset
me
again.
Try
to
be
a
good
boy,
and
don’t
take
any
more
medicine.”
Tom
got
to
school
early.
Lately,
this
strange
thing
happened
every
day.
And
now,
like
always,
he
stayed
by
the
schoolyard
gate
instead
of
playing
with
friends.
He
said
he
was
sick,
and
he
looked
it.
He
tried
to
look
everywhere
except
where
he
really
wanted
to
look—down
the
road.
Soon,
Jeff
Thatcher
came
into
view,
and
Tom's
face
brightened;
he
looked
for
a
moment,
then
turned
away
sadly.
When
Jeff
arrived,
Tom
talked
to
him
and
tried
to
mention
Becky,
but
Jeff
didn't
understand.
Tom
watched
and
waited,
hoping
every
time
he
saw
a
dress,
but
he
hated
it
when
it
wasn't
the
right
one.
Finally,
no
more
dresses
came,
and
he
felt
very
sad;
he
went
into
the
empty
schoolhouse
and
sat
down.
Then
one
more
dress
came
through
the
gate,
and
Tom's
heart
jumped.
The
next
moment,
he
was
outside,
acting
wild;
yelling,
laughing,
chasing
boys,
jumping
over
the
fence,
doing
flips,
standing
on
his
head—doing
everything
he
could
think
of,
while
watching
to
see
if
Becky
Thatcher
noticed.
But
she
didn't
seem
to
see
him;
she
never
looked.
Could
she
really
not
know
he
was
there?
He
did
his
tricks
near
her;
ran
around,
grabbed
a
boy's
cap,
threw
it
on
the
schoolhouse
roof,
pushed
through
a
group
of
boys,
knocking
them
down,
and
fell
right
in
front
of
Becky,
almost
hitting
her—and
she
turned
away,
nose
in
the
air,
and
he
heard
her
say,
"Hm!
Some
people
think
they're
so
smart—always
showing
off!"
Tom's
face
turned
red.
He
got
up
and
walked
away,
feeling
sad
and
embarrassed.
