Las aventuras de Tom Sawyer
Capítulo 20, Página 2
"You
should
be
ashamed,
Tom
Sawyer.
You'll
tell
on
me,
and
what
will
I
do?
I'll
get
whipped,
and
I've
never
been
whipped
in
school."
She
stamped
her
foot
and
said:
"Be
mean
if
you
want!
I
know
something
will
happen.
You'll
see!
Hateful,
hateful,
hateful!"
She
ran
out
crying.
Tom
stood
there,
surprised
by
her
words.
He
thought:
"Girls
are
so
strange!
Never
been
whipped
in
school!
What's
a
whipping!
Girls
are
so
soft.
I
won't
tell
Mr.
Dobbins
about
her.
He'll
ask
who
tore
the
book,
and
nobody
will
answer.
He'll
find
out
when
he
sees
the
right
girl.
Girls
can't
hide
the
truth.
She'll
get
whipped.
It's
a
tough
spot
for
Becky
Thatcher,
and
there's
no
way
out."
Tom
thought
more
and
said:
"Alright,
she
would
like
to
see
me
in
trouble
too—let
her
worry!"
Tom
joined
the
other
kids
outside.
Soon,
the
teacher
came,
and
school
started.
Tom
wasn't
interested
in
his
studies.
He
looked
at
Becky,
and
her
face
worried
him.
He
didn't
want
to
feel
sorry
for
her,
but
he
couldn't
help
it.
When
they
found
the
torn
spelling-book,
Tom
thought
about
his
own
problems.
Becky
watched
with
interest.
She
didn't
think
Tom
could
escape
trouble
by
saying
he
didn't
spill
the
ink,
and
she
was
right.
His
denial
made
it
worse.
Becky
thought
she
should
be
happy
about
that,
but
she
wasn't
sure.
When
things
got
really
bad,
she
wanted
to
tell
on
Alfred
Temple
but
stopped
herself.
She
thought,
"He'll
tell
about
me
tearing
the
picture.
I
won't
say
a
word,
not
even
to
save
him!"
Tom
got
his
whipping
and
went
back
to
his
seat.
He
wasn't
very
sad
because
he
thought
maybe
he
did
spill
the
ink.
He
had
denied
it
because
it
was
what
people
did,
and
he
stuck
to
it.
An
hour
passed,
and
Mr.
Dobbins
sat
nodding.
The
room
was
quiet.
Then
he
straightened
up,
yawned,
and
unlocked
his
desk.
He
seemed
unsure
about
taking
out
his
book.
Most
students
watched
him.
Tom
and
Becky
watched
closely.
Mr.
Dobbins
played
with
his
book,
then
took
it
out
to
read.
Tom
looked
at
Becky.
She
looked
like
a
scared
rabbit.
Tom
forgot
their
fight.
He
had
to
do
something
fast!
He
thought
about
grabbing
the
book
and
running,
but
he
hesitated.
The
chance
was
gone—Mr.
Dobbins
opened
the
book.
Tom
wished
he
could
try
again,
but
it
was
too
late.
Becky
was
in
trouble
now.
The
teacher
faced
the
class.
Everyone
was
scared.
He
asked,
"Who
tore
this
book?"
