Las aventuras de Tom Sawyer
Capítulo 4, Página 3
“All
right!
What
is
it,
Mary,
tell
me
what
it
is.”
“Never
you
mind,
Tom.
If
I
say
it’s
nice,
it
is
nice.”
“You
bet
that’s
true,
Mary.
Okay,
I’ll
try
again.”
And
he
did
try
again.
Wanting
to
know
and
getting
a
reward
helped
him.
He
learned
it
well.
Mary
gave
him
a
new
“Barlow”
knife
worth
twelve
and
a
half
cents.
He
was
very
happy.
The
knife
didn’t
cut
well,
but
it
was
a
real
Barlow.
Tom
scratched
the
cupboard
with
it
and
was
about
to
start
on
the
bureau
when
he
had
to
get
ready
for
Sunday-school.
Mary
gave
him
a
tin
basin
of
water
and
soap.
He
went
outside
and
put
the
basin
on
a
bench.
He
dipped
the
soap
in
the
water
and
put
it
down.
He
rolled
up
his
sleeves,
poured
the
water
on
the
ground,
and
went
inside
to
wipe
his
face
on
the
towel
behind
the
door.
But
Mary
took
the
towel
and
said:
“Now
aren’t
you
ashamed,
Tom.
You
shouldn’t
be
so
bad.
Water
won’t
hurt
you.”
Tom
felt
a
bit
guilty.
The
basin
was
filled
again.
He
stood
over
it
for
a
while,
took
a
deep
breath,
and
started.
When
he
came
back
in,
his
eyes
were
shut,
and
water
dripped
from
his
face.
But
his
face
was
clean
only
to
his
chin.
Below
that,
it
was
still
dirty.
Mary
helped
him,
and
soon
he
was
clean
and
neat.
[He
fixed
his
hair
because
he
thought
curls
were
for
girls,
and
he
didn’t
like
them.]
Then
Mary
got
his
Sunday
clothes.
They
were
his
“other
clothes.”
She
helped
him
dress,
buttoned
his
shirt,
and
brushed
him
off.
She
put
his
straw
hat
on
him.
He
looked
much
better
but
felt
uncomfortable.
He
didn’t
like
clean
clothes.
He
hoped
Mary
would
forget
his
shoes,
but
she
didn’t.
She
polished
them
and
brought
them
out.
He
got
upset
and
said
he
always
had
to
do
things
he
didn’t
like.
But
Mary
said:
“Please,
Tom—that’s
a
good
boy.”
