Las aventuras de Tom Sawyer
Capítulo 8, Página 1
Tom
ran
through
the
streets,
trying
to
avoid
his
classmates.
Soon,
he
was
far
away,
jogging
slowly.
He
crossed
a
small
stream
several
times.
Kids
said
crossing
water
confused
people
chasing
you.
Half
an
hour
later,
he
was
behind
the
Douglas
mansion
on
Cardiff
Hill.
The
school
was
far
behind
him.
He
entered
a
thick
forest
and
walked
to
the
center.
He
sat
on
a
soft,
mossy
spot
under
a
big
oak
tree.
There
was
no
wind.
The
noon
heat
was
strong,
and
even
the
birds
were
quiet.
The
only
sound
was
a
woodpecker
tapping
far
away.
The
silence
made
Tom
feel
lonely
and
sad.
He
rested
his
elbows
on
his
knees
and
put
his
chin
in
his
hands.
He
thought
life
was
hard.
He
almost
wished
he
was
like
Jimmy
Hodges,
who
had
died.
He
thought
it
must
be
peaceful
to
sleep
forever
with
the
wind
in
the
trees
and
nothing
to
worry
about.
If
only
he
had
been
good
in
Sunday
school,
he
would
be
ready
to
go.
Now,
about
the
girl.
What
had
he
done
wrong?
Nothing.
He
had
tried
to
be
nice,
but
she
treated
him
badly.
One
day
she
would
be
sorry,
maybe
when
it
was
too
late.
Ah,
if
he
could
only
die
for
a
little
while!
But
young
hearts
can't
stay
sad
for
long.
Tom
started
thinking
about
life
again.
What
if
he
left
and
never
came
back?
How
would
she
feel
then?
He
thought
about
being
a
clown,
but
the
idea
made
him
unhappy.
Jokes
and
funny
clothes
didn't
fit
his
mood.
No,
he
would
be
a
soldier
and
come
back
a
hero.
Or
better,
he
would
join
the
Indians,
hunt
buffalo,
and
become
a
great
chief.
He
would
return
to
Sunday
school
one
day
and
surprise
everyone.
But
no,
there
was
something
even
more
exciting.
He
would
be
a
pirate!
That
was
it!
He
saw
his
future
clearly
now.
He
would
sail
the
seas
on
his
ship,
the
Spirit
of
the
Storm,
with
his
pirate
flag
flying.
One
day,
he
would
come
back
to
the
village,
dressed
in
a
pirate's
clothes,
and
everyone
would
whisper,
“It’s
Tom
Sawyer
the
Pirate!”
Yes,
he
decided.
He
would
run
away
and
start
his
new
life.
He
would
leave
the
next
morning.
So,
he
needed
to
get
ready.
He
went
to
a
rotten
log
nearby
and
started
digging
with
his
knife.
Soon,
he
hit
something
hollow.
He
reached
in
and
said
some
magic
words:
“What
hasn’t
come
here,
come!
What’s
here,
stay
here!”
He
cleared
the
dirt
and
found
a
piece
of
wood.
Under
it,
there
was
a
small
treasure
box
made
of
shingles.
Inside
was
a
marble.
Tom
was
very
surprised!
He
scratched
his
head
and
said:
“Well,
that
beats
anything!”
Then
he
threw
the
marble
away
angrily
and
thought.
He
believed
in
a
trick
that
never
failed
before.
If
you
buried
a
marble
with
magic
words
and
left
it
for
two
weeks,
all
your
lost
marbles
would
gather
there.
But
now
it
didn't
work.
Tom's
belief
was
shaken.
He
had
heard
it
worked
but
never
saw
it
fail.
He
didn't
remember
he
tried
it
before
and
couldn't
find
the
marbles.
He
thought
maybe
a
witch
had
broken
the
magic.
He
wanted
to
know
for
sure.
So,
he
looked
around
and
found
a
sandy
spot
with
a
small
hole.
He
lay
down
and
spoke
into
it:
“Doodle-bug,
doodle-bug,
tell
me
what
I
want
to
know!
Doodle-bug,
doodle-bug,
tell
me
what
I
want
to
know!”
