Las aventuras de Tom Sawyer
Capítulo 10, Página 10
Then
they
went
their
separate
ways,
thinking.
When
Tom
crept
in
through
his
bedroom
window,
the
night
was
almost
over.
He
undressed
very
carefully
and
fell
asleep,
happy
that
nobody
knew
about
his
adventure.
He
didn't
realize
that
Sid,
who
was
gently
snoring,
was
awake
and
had
been
for
an
hour.
When
Tom
woke
up,
Sid
was
dressed
and
gone.
The
light
seemed
late,
and
the
air
felt
late.
He
was
surprised.
Why
hadn't
he
been
called—made
to
get
up,
like
usual?
The
thought
worried
him.
Within
five
minutes,
he
was
dressed
and
downstairs,
feeling
tired
and
sore.
The
family
was
still
at
the
table,
but
they
had
finished
breakfast.
There
were
no
scolding
voices,
but
there
were
eyes
looking
away;
there
was
silence
and
a
serious
air
that
chilled
Tom's
heart.
He
sat
down
and
tried
to
seem
cheerful,
but
it
was
hard
work;
it
brought
no
smiles,
no
response,
and
he
fell
silent,
letting
his
heart
sink.
After
breakfast,
his
aunt
took
him
aside,
and
Tom
almost
felt
better,
hoping
he
would
be
punished;
but
it
wasn't
so.
His
aunt
cried
over
him
and
asked
how
he
could
break
her
heart
like
that;
and
finally
told
him
to
go
on,
ruin
himself,
and
bring
her
sorrow
to
the
grave,
as
it
was
no
use
trying
anymore.
This
was
worse
than
a
thousand
punishments,
and
Tom's
heart
hurt
more
now
than
his
body.
He
cried,
begged
for
forgiveness,
promised
to
change
again
and
again,
and
then
left,
feeling
he
had
only
partly
been
forgiven
and
had
gained
little
trust.
He
left
too
miserable
to
even
be
angry
at
Sid;
so
Sid's
quick
escape
through
the
back
gate
wasn't
needed.
He
went
to
school
feeling
gloomy
and
sad,
and
took
his
punishment,
along
with
Joe
Harper,
for
skipping
school
the
day
before,
with
the
attitude
of
someone
whose
heart
was
busy
with
bigger
troubles
and
dead
to
small
things.
Then
he
went
to
his
seat,
rested
his
elbows
on
his
desk,
put
his
hands
on
his
face,
and
stared
at
the
wall
with
the
empty
look
of
suffering
that
has
reached
its
limit.
His
elbow
pressed
against
something
hard.
After
a
long
time,
he
slowly
and
sadly
changed
his
position
and
picked
up
the
object
with
a
sigh.
It
was
in
a
paper.
He
unrolled
it.
A
long,
deep
sigh
followed,
and
his
heart
broke.
It
was
his
brass
andiron
knob!
This
was
the
final
straw
that
broke
the
camel's
back.
