Las aventuras de Tom Sawyer
Capítulo 12, Página 4
"A
lot.
If
he
had
an
aunt,
she
would
have
burned
him
out
herself!
She'd
have
roasted
him
without
any
more
feeling
than
if
he
was
a
human!"
Aunt
Polly
suddenly
felt
bad.
This
made
her
see
things
differently;
what
was
cruel
to
a
cat
might
also
be
cruel
to
a
boy.
She
started
to
feel
sorry.
Her
eyes
got
a
bit
watery,
and
she
gently
put
her
hand
on
Tom's
head.
"I
was
trying
to
help,
Tom.
And,
Tom,
it
did
help
you."
Tom
looked
up
at
her
with
a
slight
smile.
"I
know
you
were
trying
to
help,
aunty,
and
so
was
I
with
Peter.
It
did
him
good,
too.
I've
never
seen
him
move
so
much
since—"
"Oh,
go
on,
Tom,
before
you
upset
me
again.
And
try
to
be
a
good
boy
for
once,
and
you
don't
need
to
take
any
more
medicine."
Tom
arrived
at
school
early.
People
noticed
he
had
been
doing
this
every
day
recently.
Instead
of
playing
with
his
friends,
he
stood
by
the
schoolyard
gate.
He
said
he
was
sick,
and
he
looked
like
it.
He
pretended
to
look
around,
but
he
was
really
watching
the
road.
Soon,
Jeff
Thatcher
appeared,
and
Tom's
face
brightened.
He
watched
for
a
moment,
then
turned
away
sadly.
When
Jeff
got
there,
Tom
talked
to
him
and
tried
to
steer
the
conversation
towards
Becky.
But
Jeff
didn't
catch
on.
Tom
kept
watching,
hoping
every
time
he
saw
a
dress,
but
he
hated
it
when
it
wasn't
the
right
one.
Finally,
no
more
dresses
came,
and
he
felt
hopeless.
He
went
into
the
empty
schoolhouse
and
sat
down,
feeling
miserable.
Then
another
dress
appeared
at
the
gate,
and
Tom's
heart
jumped.
He
ran
outside,
acting
wild—yelling,
laughing,
chasing
boys,
jumping
over
the
fence,
doing
flips,
and
watching
to
see
if
Becky
Thatcher
noticed.
But
she
didn't
seem
to
see
him
at
all.
Was
it
possible
she
didn't
know
he
was
there?
He
moved
closer,
shouting
and
playing,
grabbed
a
boy's
cap,
threw
it
on
the
schoolhouse
roof,
and
pushed
through
a
group
of
boys,
falling
right
in
front
of
Becky.
She
almost
stumbled,
but
just
turned
her
nose
up
and
said,
"Mf!
Some
people
think
they're
so
smart—always
showing
off!"
Tom's
face
turned
red.
He
picked
himself
up
and
sneaked
away,
feeling
crushed
and
embarrassed.
