Las aventuras de Tom Sawyer
Capítulo 13, Página 1
Tom
had
made
up
his
mind.
He
felt
sad
and
desperate.
He
thought
of
himself
as
a
lonely
boy
without
friends.
Nobody
loved
him,
he
said.
Maybe
they
would
be
sorry
when
they
realized
what
they
had
done
to
him.
He
had
tried
to
do
the
right
thing,
but
they
wouldn’t
let
him.
Since
they
wanted
to
be
rid
of
him,
he
would
let
them.
They
could
blame
him
for
what
happened
next.
Why
shouldn’t
they?
What
right
did
a
friendless
boy
have
to
complain?
They
had
pushed
him
to
this
point:
he
would
live
a
life
of
crime.
He
had
no
other
choice.
By
now,
he
was
walking
far
down
Meadow
Lane.
The
school
bell
rang
faintly
in
his
ears.
He
cried,
thinking
he
would
never
hear
that
familiar
sound
again.
It
was
hard,
but
he
had
no
other
option.
Since
he
was
forced
into
the
cold
world,
he
had
to
accept
it.
But
he
forgave
them.
Then
his
sobs
came
quickly
and
heavily.
At
this
moment,
he
met
his
best
friend,
Joe
Harper.
Joe
looked
serious
and
had
a
sad
purpose
in
his
heart.
Clearly,
these
were
"two
souls
with
but
a
single
thought."
Tom
wiped
his
eyes
with
his
sleeve
and
began
to
talk.
He
spoke
about
his
plan
to
escape
from
the
hard
life
and
lack
of
sympathy
at
home.
He
wanted
to
travel
the
world
and
never
come
back.
He
hoped
Joe
would
not
forget
him.
But
it
turned
out
Joe
wanted
to
ask
Tom
the
same
thing.
Joe
had
come
to
find
him
for
that
reason.
His
mother
had
punished
him
for
drinking
cream
he
never
tasted.
It
was
clear
she
was
tired
of
him
and
wanted
him
to
leave.
If
she
felt
that
way,
he
had
no
choice
but
to
give
in.
He
hoped
she
would
be
happy
and
never
regret
driving
her
poor
boy
into
the
uncaring
world
to
suffer
and
die.
As
the
two
boys
walked
sadly
together,
they
made
a
new
promise.
They
agreed
to
support
each
other
like
brothers
and
never
separate
until
death.
Then
they
started
making
plans.
Joe
wanted
to
be
a
hermit,
living
on
crusts
in
a
faraway
cave
and
eventually
dying
from
cold
and
hunger.
But
after
listening
to
Tom,
he
agreed
there
were
benefits
to
a
life
of
crime.
So
he
decided
to
be
a
pirate.
Three
miles
below
St.
Petersburg,
at
a
point
where
the
Mississippi
River
was
a
little
over
a
mile
wide,
there
was
a
long,
narrow,
wooded
island.
It
had
a
shallow
bar
at
its
head,
making
it
a
good
hideout.
It
was
uninhabited
and
lay
near
a
dense,
almost
empty
forest.
So
they
chose
Jackson’s
Island.
They
didn’t
think
about
who
their
pirate
victims
would
be.
Then
they
found
Huckleberry
Finn,
who
joined
them
quickly.
He
didn’t
mind
what
he
did.
They
agreed
to
meet
at
a
lonely
spot
on
the
riverbank
two
miles
above
the
village
at
midnight.
There
was
a
small
log
raft
there
they
planned
to
capture.
Each
would
bring
hooks,
lines,
and
whatever
food
they
could
secretly
take,
like
real
outlaws.
Before
the
afternoon
ended,
they
enjoyed
telling
people
that
soon
the
town
would
"hear
something."
Everyone
who
heard
this
hint
was
told
to
"keep
quiet
and
wait."
Around
midnight,
Tom
arrived
with
a
boiled
ham
and
a
few
other
things.
He
stopped
in
a
thick
undergrowth
on
a
small
hill
overlooking
the
meeting
place.
The
stars
were
out,
and
it
was
very
quiet.
The
mighty
river
lay
still
like
a
calm
ocean.
Tom
listened
for
a
moment,
but
no
sound
broke
the
silence.
Then
he
gave
a
low,
clear
whistle.
It
was
answered
from
under
the
hill.
Tom
whistled
twice
more,
and
the
signals
were
returned
in
the
same
way.
Then
a
cautious
voice
asked:
“Who
goes
there?”
