Red-Handed

being
busy.
He

making

corn
cob
pipe.
Now
he
put
a
weed
stem
in
it,
filled
it
with
tobacco,
and
lit
it,
blowing
a
cloud
of
smoke.
He
was
completely
content.
The
other
pirates
envied
him
this
habit
and
secretly
decided
to
learn
it
soon.
Huck
then
asked:
“What
do
pirates
have
to
do?”
Tom
replied:
“Oh,
they
have
a
great
time—take
ships,
burn
them,
get
the
money,
and
bury
it
in
scary
places
on
their
island
with
ghosts
to
guard
it.
They
make
everyone
on
the
ships
walk
the
plank.”
“And
they
take
the
women
to
the
island,”
said
Joe.
“They
don’t
kill
the
women.”
“No,”
agreed
Tom,
“they
don’t
kill
the
women—they’re
too
noble.
And
the
women
are
always
beautiful,
too.”
“And
don’t
they
wear
the
best
clothes!
Oh
no!
All
gold
and
silver
and
diamonds,”
said
Joe,
excitedly.
