After
dinner,
the
whole
gang
went
out
to
look
for
turtle
eggs
on
the
sandbar.
They
poked
sticks
into
the
sand,
and
when
they
found
a
soft
spot,
they
knelt
down
and
dug
with
their
hands.
Sometimes
they
found
fifty
or
sixty
eggs
in
one
hole.
The
eggs
were
perfectly
round
and
white,
a
bit
smaller
than
an
English
walnut.
That
night,
they
had
a
great
fried-egg
feast,
and
another
one
on
Friday
morning.
After
breakfast,
they
ran
and
played
on
the
sandbar,
chasing
each
other
and
taking
off
their
clothes
until
they
were
naked.
They
kept
playing
in
the
shallow
water,
where
the
strong
current
sometimes
knocked
them
over,
making
it
even
more
fun.
They
splashed
water
in
each
other's
faces,
trying
to
avoid
getting
sprayed,
and
then
wrestled
until
one
of
them
dunked
the
other.
They
all
went
under
the
water,
coming
up
laughing
and
gasping
for
air.
When
they
got
tired,
they
lay
on
the
hot
sand,
covering
themselves
with
it.
After
a
while,
they
would
jump
back
into
the
water
and
play
all
over
again.
At
some
point,
they
realized
their
bare
skin
looked
like
circus
tights,
so
they
drew
a
circle
in
the
sand
and
pretended
to
have
a
circus,
with
all
three
acting
as
clowns
since
none
wanted
to
give
up
the
role.
Next,
they
played
marbles
with
games
like
"knucks,"
"ringtaw,"
and
"keeps"
until
they
got
bored.
Joe
and
Huck
went
for
another
swim,
but
Tom
didn't
join
them.
He
had
lost
his
string
of
rattlesnake
rattles,
which
he
believed
protected
him
from
cramps.
He
looked
for
it
before
swimming
again,
and
by
then,
the
other
boys
were
tired
and
ready
to
rest.
They
wandered
apart,
feeling
a
bit
sad,
and
looked
across
the
river
at
the
village.
Tom
wrote
"BECKY"
in
the
sand
with
his
toe,
erased
it,
and
felt
ashamed.
But
he
wrote
it
again,
unable
to
resist,
and
then
erased
it
once
more.
Finally,
he
joined
the
other
boys.
Joe
was
feeling
really
homesick
and
almost
cried.
Huck
felt
down,
too.
Tom
was
sad
as
well
but
tried
not
to
show
it.
He
had
a
secret
he
wasn't
ready
to
share
yet,
but
if
the
mood
didn't
change,
he
might
have
to.
He
tried
to
sound
cheerful
and
said:
"I
bet
pirates
have
been
on
this
island
before,
boys.
Let's
explore
it
again.
They
must
have
hidden
treasure
here
somewhere.
How
would
you
feel
if
we
found
a
chest
full
of
gold
and
silver?"
But
the
idea
didn't
excite
them
much,
and
they
didn't
respond.
Tom
tried
other
ideas,
but
they
didn't
work
either.
Joe
sat
poking
the
sand
with
a
stick,
looking
very
unhappy.
Finally,
he
said:
"Oh,
boys,
let's
give
up.
I
want
to
go
home.
It's
so
lonely."
