Las aventuras de Tom Sawyer
Capítulo 18, Página 1
Tom's
big
secret
was
to
come
back
home
with
his
pirate
friends
and
attend
their
own
funerals.
They
had
paddled
to
the
Missouri
shore
on
a
log
at
dusk
on
Saturday,
landing
five
or
six
miles
below
the
village.
They
slept
in
the
woods
near
the
town
until
almost
daylight,
then
sneaked
through
back
lanes
and
alleys
and
finished
their
sleep
in
the
church
gallery
among
some
broken
benches.
On
Monday
morning
at
breakfast,
Aunt
Polly
and
Mary
were
very
kind
to
Tom
and
took
care
of
everything
he
needed.
There
was
a
lot
of
talking.
During
the
conversation,
Aunt
Polly
said:
"Well,
I
won’t
say
it
wasn’t
a
clever
joke,
Tom,
keeping
everyone
worried
for
almost
a
week
so
you
boys
could
enjoy
yourselves.
But
it’s
a
shame
you
let
me
suffer
so.
If
you
could
come
over
on
a
log
to
attend
your
funeral,
you
could
have
come
over
and
let
me
know
somehow
that
you
weren’t
dead,
just
ran
off."
"Yes,
you
could
have
done
that,
Tom,"
said
Mary.
"And
I
think
you
would
have,
if
you’d
thought
of
it."
"Would
you,
Tom?"
asked
Aunt
Polly,
her
eyes
hopeful.
"Tell
me,
would
you
have
done
it
if
you’d
thought
of
it?"
"I—well,
I’m
not
sure.
It
would’ve
ruined
everything."
"Tom,
I
hoped
you
loved
me
enough
for
that,"
said
Aunt
Polly,
sounding
hurt,
which
made
Tom
uncomfortable.
"It
would
have
meant
something
if
you
cared
enough
to
think
of
it,
even
if
you
didn’t
do
it."
"Now,
auntie,
it’s
not
so
bad,"
Mary
said.
"It’s
just
Tom’s
silly
way—he’s
always
in
such
a
hurry
that
he
never
thinks
of
anything."
