sad,

realize

brought
his
troubles

wrong

skinning

"Well,

did
plenty.
I
went
over
to
Sereny
Harper,
like
a
fool,
thinking
she'd
believe
that
nonsense
about
the
dream.
But
she
found
out
from
Joe
that
you
were
here
and
heard
everything
we
talked
about
that
night.
Tom,
I
don't
know
what
will
happen
to

boy
who
acts
like
that.
It
hurts

to
think
you
let

go
to

Harper

make

without

Tom
thought
his
cleverness
in

morning
was
a
good
joke
before,
and
very
smart.
Now,
it
seemed
mean
and
shabby.
He
lowered
his
head
and
couldn't
think
of
anything
to
say
for
a
moment.
Then
he
said:
"Auntie,
I
wish
I
hadn't
done
it—but
I
didn't
think."
"Oh,
child,
you

think.

think

selfishness.
You
thought
to
come
all
the
way
from
Jackson's
Island
at
night
to
laugh
at
our
worries,
and
you
thought
to
trick
me
with
a
lie
about
a
dream;
but
you
never
thought
to
pity
us
and
save
us
from
sadness."
"Auntie,
I
know
now
it
was
mean,
but
I
didn't
mean
to
be
mean.
I
didn't,
honest.
And
besides,
