Las aventuras de Tom Sawyer
Capítulo 18, Página 11
“Any
other
boy!”
Tom
thought,
grinding
his
teeth.
“Anyone
in
town
but
that
Saint
Louis
boy
who
thinks
he’s
so
fancy!
Oh,
I
beat
you
the
first
day
you
came
here,
and
I’ll
do
it
again!
Just
wait
till
I
catch
you!”
And
he
imagined
fighting
an
invisible
boy—punching
and
kicking
the
air.
“Oh,
you
give
up,
do
you?
Well,
let
this
teach
you!”
And
he
finished
his
imaginary
fight,
feeling
satisfied.
Tom
ran
home
at
noon.
He
couldn’t
stand
Amy’s
happiness
or
his
jealousy
anymore.
Becky
continued
looking
at
pictures
with
Alfred,
but
as
time
passed
and
Tom
didn’t
show
up,
her
victory
felt
less
sweet.
She
became
bored
and
sad.
She
hoped
every
footstep
was
Tom,
but
it
never
was.
She
grew
miserable
and
wished
she
hadn’t
taken
things
so
far.
When
Alfred
tried
to
show
her
more
pictures,
saying,
“Look
at
this
one!”
she
lost
her
patience.
“Oh,
leave
me
alone!
I
don’t
care!”
she
burst
into
tears
and
walked
away.
Alfred
tried
to
comfort
her,
but
she
said:
“Go
away!
I
hate
you!”
So
Alfred
stopped,
confused
about
what
he
did
wrong—she
had
agreed
to
look
at
pictures
during
lunch.
She
walked
on,
crying.
Alfred
went
back
to
the
empty
schoolhouse,
feeling
humiliated
and
angry.
He
realized
Becky
used
him
to
hurt
Tom.
He
hated
Tom
even
more
and
wanted
to
get
him
in
trouble.
He
saw
Tom’s
spelling
book
and
got
an
idea.
He
opened
it
to
the
afternoon
lesson
and
poured
ink
on
the
page.
Becky
saw
this
through
a
window
but
didn’t
show
herself.
She
started
home,
planning
to
tell
Tom;
he’d
be
grateful,
and
they’d
make
up.
But
halfway
home,
she
remembered
how
Tom
treated
her
at
the
picnic
talk
and
felt
ashamed.
She
decided
to
let
him
get
punished
for
the
ruined
book
and
to
hate
him
forever.
