Tom
joined
the
Cadets
of
Temperance
because
he
liked
their
fancy
uniforms.
He
promised
not
to
smoke,
chew
tobacco,
or
swear
while
he
was
a
member.
But
he
soon
learned
that
making
such
promises
only
made
him
want
to
do
those
things
even
more.
Tom
was
very
tempted
to
drink
and
swear,
but
the
thought
of
wearing
his
red
sash
kept
him
from
quitting.
The
Fourth
of
July
was
coming,
and
he
hoped
to
show
off
then.
However,
he
soon
gave
up
on
that
idea,
not
even
lasting
two
days
with
his
promise.
Instead,
he
hoped
Judge
Frazer,
who
was
very
sick,
would
have
a
big
public
funeral.
For
three
days,
Tom
was
very
interested
in
the
Judge’s
health
and
wanted
news.
Sometimes
he
felt
hopeful
and
would
practice
wearing
his
uniform
in
front
of
the
mirror.
But
the
Judge
kept
getting
better
and
then
worse
again.
Eventually,
he
was
said
to
be
recovering.
Tom
felt
upset
and
betrayed.
He
quit
the
Cadets
immediately,
and
that
night,
the
Judge
got
worse
and
died.
Tom
decided
he
would
never
trust
someone
like
that
again.
The
funeral
was
impressive.
The
Cadets
marched
in
a
way
that
would
make
any
former
member
jealous.
Tom
was
free
again,
though,
and
that
was
something.
He
could
drink
and
swear
now,
but
he
found
he
didn’t
want
to.
Just
knowing
he
could
do
it
made
it
less
appealing.
Tom
soon
realized
that
his
much-wanted
vacation
was
becoming
a
bit
boring.
He
tried
keeping
a
diary,
but
nothing
happened
for
three
days,
so
he
gave
up.
The
first
minstrel
show
came
to
town
and
caused
excitement.
Tom
and
Joe
Harper
started
their
own
band
and
were
happy
for
two
days.
Even
the
Fourth
of
July
was
a
bit
of
a
letdown
because
it
rained
hard.
There
was
no
parade,
and
Mr.
Benton,
who
Tom
thought
was
the
greatest
man,
was
disappointing.
He
wasn’t
as
tall
as
Tom
imagined.
A
circus
came
to
town.
The
boys
played
circus
for
three
days
with
tents
made
of
old
carpets.
They
charged
three
pins
for
boys
and
two
for
girls,
but
soon
they
got
tired
of
it.
A
phrenologist
and
a
mesmerizer
visited
the
town,
but
when
they
left,
the
village
felt
duller
than
before.
