parties
for
boys
and
girls,
but
they
were
so
enjoyable
that
the
time
between
them
felt
even
emptier.
Becky
Thatcher
had
gone
to
her
home
in
Constantinople
with
her
parents
for
the
vacation,
so
there
was
no
bright
spot
for
Tom.
The
secret
of
the
murder
was
a
constant
worry
for
Tom.
It
felt
like
a
painful
burden
that
wouldn’t
go
away.
Then
Tom
caught
the
measles.
For
two
long
weeks,
Tom
was
stuck
in
bed,
unaware
of
what
was
happening
around
him.
He
was
very
sick
and
didn’t
care
about
anything.
When
he
finally
got
up
and
went
downtown,
he
noticed
a
sad
change
in
everyone.
There
had
been
a
religious
revival,
and
everyone
seemed
to
have
found
religion,
even
the
kids.
Tom
looked
for
a
familiar
face
that
hadn’t
changed,
but
he
was
disappointed
everywhere.
He
saw
Joe
Harper
reading
a
Bible
and
turned
away
sadly.
He
found
Ben
Rogers
visiting
the
poor
with
religious
pamphlets.
Jim
Hollis
told
him
the
measles
were
a
blessing
and
a
warning.
Every
boy
he
met
made
him
feel
worse.
Finally,
he
went
to
see
Huckleberry
Finn,
hoping
for
comfort,
but
Huck
greeted
him
with
a
Bible
verse.
Tom
felt
heartbroken
and
went
home,
feeling
he
was
the
only
one
in
town
who
hadn’t
changed.
That
night,
a
terrible
storm
came
with
heavy
rain,
loud
thunder,
and
bright
lightning.
Tom
hid
under
his
blankets,
terrified,
thinking
the
storm
was
a
punishment
for
him.
He
believed
he
had
pushed
his
luck
with
the
powers
above
too
far.
It
seemed
like
a
big
effort
to
punish
someone
as
small
as
him,
but
he
thought
it
was
fitting
for
such
a
big
storm
to
target
him.
Eventually,
the
storm
passed
without
achieving
its
purpose.
Tom’s
first
thought
was
to
be
thankful
and
change
his
ways.
His
second
thought
was
to
wait
and
see
if
there
would
be
more
storms.
The
next
day,
the
doctors
returned
because
Tom
had
become
sick
again.
He
spent
three
weeks
in
bed,
which
felt
like
forever.
When
he
finally
went
outside,
he
wasn’t
thankful
for
being
spared.
He
remembered
how
lonely
he
felt.
He
wandered
down
the
street
and
found
Jim
Hollis
acting
as
a
judge
in
a
kids’
court,
trying
a
cat
for
murder
in
front
of
its
victim,
a
bird.
He
found
Joe
Harper
and
Huck
Finn
in
an
alley
eating
a
stolen
melon.
Poor
boys!
They,
like
Tom,
had
also
gotten
sick
again.
