Two
men
came
in.
Each
boy
thought,
"There's
that
old
deaf
and
dumb
Spaniard
who's
been
around
town
a
few
times
lately—I
never
saw
the
other
man
before."
“The
"other"
was
a
ragged,
messy
guy,
with
nothing
nice
about
his
face.
The
Spaniard
wore
a
serape,
had
bushy
white
whiskers,
long
white
hair
under
his
sombrero,
and
green
goggles.
When
they
entered,
the
"other"
was
speaking
softly.
They
sat
on
the
ground,
facing
the
door,
with
their
backs
to
the
wall,
and
the
speaker
continued.
His
manner
became
less
careful,
and
his
words
clearer
as
he
went
on:
"No,"
he
said,
"I've
thought
it
over,
and
I
don't
like
it.
It's
dangerous."
"Dangerous!"
grunted
the
"deaf
and
dumb"
Spaniard—to
the
boys'
great
surprise.
"Coward!"
This
voice
made
the
boys
gasp
and
shake.
It
was
Injun
Joe's!
There
was
silence
for
a
while.
Then
Joe
said:
"What's
more
dangerous
than
that
job
up
there—but
nothing's
happened."
"That's
different.
It's
way
up
the
river,
and
no
other
houses
around.
Nobody
will
know
we
tried,
as
long
as
we
didn't
succeed."
"Well,
what's
more
dangerous
than
coming
here
in
the
daytime!
Anyone
who
saw
us
would
be
suspicious."
