will
mom
say?”
“How
will
she
ever
find
out?”
Becky
considered
it
and
said
hesitantly:
“I
guess
it
might
be
wrong,
but—”
“But
come
on!
Your
mom
won’t
know,
so
what’s
the
harm?
She
just
wants
you
to
be
safe.
I
bet
she’d
have
said
yes
if
she
thought
of
it.
I’m
sure!”
The
idea
of
ice-cream
at
Widow
Douglas’
was
too
tempting.
With
Tom’s
persuasion,
Becky
agreed.
They
decided
not
to
tell
anyone
about
their
plan
for
the
night.
Tom
thought
maybe
Huck
would
come
that
night
with
the
signal.
This
made
him
less
excited,
but
he
didn’t
want
to
miss
the
fun
at
Widow
Douglas’.
He
reasoned
that
the
signal
hadn’t
come
the
night
before,
so
why
would
it
come
tonight?
The
sure
fun
of
the
evening
was
more
appealing
than
the
uncertain
treasure.
So,
he
decided
to
enjoy
the
evening
and
not
think
about
the
treasure
again
that
day.
Three
miles
from
town,
the
ferryboat
stopped
at
the
mouth
of
a
wooded
area
and
tied
up.
The
group
got
off
and
soon
the
forest
was
filled
with
their
shouts
and
laughter.
They
played
until
they
were
hot
and
tired,
then
returned
to
camp
with
big
appetites.
They
began
eating
all
the
good
food.
After
the
feast,
they
rested
and
chatted
under
the
shade
of
big
oak
trees.
Then
someone
shouted:
