On
Friday
morning,
Tom
heard
some
great
news—Judge
Thatcher’s
family
had
returned
to
town
the
night
before.
For
a
moment,
he
forgot
about
Injun
Joe
and
the
treasure
because
Becky
was
back.
He
saw
her,
and
they
had
a
fantastic
time
playing
games
like
"hispy"
and
"gully-keeper"
with
their
school
friends.
The
day
ended
perfectly
when
Becky
convinced
her
mother
to
finally
set
the
date
for
the
long-promised
picnic.
Her
mother
agreed,
and
Becky
was
thrilled.
Tom
was
just
as
excited.
Invitations
went
out
before
sunset,
and
soon
all
the
village
kids
were
buzzing
with
excitement
and
getting
ready.
Tom
was
so
thrilled
that
he
stayed
awake
late,
hoping
to
hear
Huck’s
signal
so
he
could
show
Becky
and
the
others
the
treasure
the
next
day.
But
he
was
disappointed;
there
was
no
signal
that
night.
The
next
morning
came,
and
by
ten
or
eleven
o’clock,
a
lively
group
gathered
at
Judge
Thatcher’s
house,
ready
to
go.
Adults
didn’t
usually
join
these
picnics,
so
the
kids
were
supervised
by
a
few
young
ladies
and
gentlemen.
They
hired
an
old
steam
ferry-boat
for
the
trip.
The
cheerful
group
walked
up
the
main
street
carrying
baskets
of
food.
Sid
was
sick
and
couldn’t
join,
so
Mary
stayed
home
with
him.
Before
Becky
left,
Mrs.
Thatcher
said:
“You
won’t
be
back
until
late.
Maybe
you
should
stay
overnight
with
one
of
the
girls
near
the
ferry-landing,
dear.”
“Then
I’ll
stay
with
Susy
Harper,
mom.”
“Very
well.
Make
sure
to
behave
and
don’t
cause
any
trouble.”
As
they
walked,
Tom
said
to
Becky:
“Hey,
I
have
an
idea.
Instead
of
going
to
Joe
Harper’s,
let’s
go
up
the
hill
to
Widow
Douglas’.
She
always
has
ice-cream,
loads
of
it.
She’ll
be
happy
to
have
us.”
“Oh,
that
sounds
fun!”
