Las aventuras de Tom Sawyer
Capítulo 3, Página 1
Tom
stood
in
front
of
Aunt
Polly,
who
was
sitting
by
an
open
window
in
a
cozy
room
that
served
as
her
bedroom,
breakfast
room,
dining
room,
and
library.
The
warm
summer
air,
the
peaceful
quiet,
the
scent
of
flowers,
and
the
gentle
buzz
of
bees
had
made
her
sleepy,
and
she
was
nodding
over
her
knitting.
She
had
no
company
except
the
cat,
which
was
asleep
in
her
lap.
Her
glasses
rested
on
her
gray
hair
for
safety.
She
thought
Tom
had
probably
run
off
long
ago,
so
she
was
surprised
to
see
him
back
so
boldly.
He
asked,
"Can
I
go
play
now,
aunt?"
"What,
already?
How
much
have
you
done?"
"It's
all
finished,
aunt."
"Tom,
don't
lie
to
me—I
can't
stand
it."
"I'm
not
lying,
aunt;
it's
really
all
done."
Aunt
Polly
didn't
trust
his
words.
She
went
out
to
check
for
herself
and
would
have
been
happy
if
even
twenty
percent
of
Tom's
claim
was
true.
But
when
she
saw
the
whole
fence
perfectly
whitewashed,
with
extra
coats
and
even
a
stripe
on
the
ground,
she
was
almost
speechless
with
surprise.
She
said:
"Well,
I
never!
You
can
work
when
you
want
to,
Tom."
Then
she
added,
"But
it's
rare
that
you
want
to,
I
must
say.
Well,
go
on
and
play;
but
make
sure
you
come
back
sometime
this
week,
or
I'll
tan
you."
She
was
so
impressed
by
his
work
that
she
took
him
to
the
closet,
picked
out
a
nice
apple,
and
gave
it
to
him
along
with
a
lecture
about
how
treats
are
better
when
earned
honestly.
As
she
finished
her
talk
with
a
happy
note
from
the
Bible,
he
sneaked
a
doughnut.
