sank
back,
breathing
gently
but
deeply,
incredibly
grateful.
The
Welshman
looked
at
him
seriously,
curiously—and
soon
said:
“Yes,
burglar’s
tools.
That
seems
to
make
you
feel
better.
But
what
gave
you
such
a
scare?
What
were
you
expecting
we’d
found?”
Huck
was
in
a
tight
spot—the
curious
eyes
were
on
him—he
would
have
given
anything
for
a
good
answer—nothing
came
to
mind—the
curious
eyes
were
looking
deeper
and
deeper—a
silly
reply
came
to
him—there
was
no
time
to
think,
so
he
said
it—weakly:
“Sunday-school
books,
maybe.”
Poor
Huck
was
too
upset
to
smile,
but
the
old
man
laughed
loudly
and
happily,
shaking
with
laughter
from
head
to
toe,
and
ended
by
saying
that
such
a
laugh
was
like
money
in
a
man’s
pocket,
because
it
cut
down
the
doctor’s
bill
like
nothing
else.
Then
he
added:
"Poor
guy,
you
look
pale
and
tired.
You're
not
feeling
well
at
all,
no
wonder
you're
a
bit
confused.
But
you'll
get
better.
Rest
and
sleep
will
help
you
recover,
I
hope."
Huck
felt
annoyed
with
himself
for
getting
so
excited
and
giving
away
his
suspicion.
He
had
stopped
thinking
the
parcel
from
the
tavern
was
the
treasure
once
he
heard
the
talk
at
the
widow's
stile.
He
only
thought
it
might
not
be
the
treasure,
but
he
wasn't
sure.
So,
the
idea
of
a
captured
bundle
was
too
much
for
him
to
handle.
Still,
he
was
glad
it
happened
because
now
he
knew
for
sure
that
the
bundle
wasn't
the
treasure.
He
felt
calm
and
very
comfortable
about
it.
Everything
seemed
to
be
going
well
now;
the
treasure
must
still
be
in
No.
2,
the
men
would
be
caught
and
put
in
jail
that
day,
and
he
and
Tom
could
take
the
gold
that
night
without
any
trouble
or
fear
of
being
stopped.
Just
as
breakfast
was
finished,
there
was
a
knock
at
the
door.
Huck
quickly
hid
because
he
didn't
want
to
be
linked
to
the
recent
event.
The
Welshman
let
in
several
ladies
and
gentlemen,
including
Widow
Douglas,
and
noticed
groups
of
people
climbing
the
hill
to
look
at
the
stile.
The
news
had
spread.
The
Welshman
had
to
tell
the
visitors
the
story
of
the
night.
The
widow
was
very
grateful
for
being
saved.
