scary,"
Becky
said.
"It's
scary,
but
I
should,
Becky.
They
might
hear
us,"
he
said
and
shouted
again.
The
"might"
felt
even
scarier
than
the
echoing
laughter
because
it
showed
their
hope
was
fading.
The
children
stood
still
and
listened,
but
nothing
happened.
Tom
quickly
turned
back
and
hurried
his
steps.
Soon,
Becky
realized
another
terrible
truth—Tom
couldn't
find
the
way
back!
"Oh,
Tom,
you
didn't
make
any
marks!"
"Becky,
I
was
such
a
fool!
I
never
thought
we
might
want
to
come
back!
No—I
can't
find
the
way.
It's
all
mixed
up."
"Tom,
Tom,
we're
lost!
We're
lost!
We'll
never
get
out
of
this
awful
place!
Why
did
we
leave
the
others!"
She
fell
to
the
ground
and
cried
so
hard
that
Tom
feared
she
might
die
or
lose
her
mind.
He
sat
beside
her,
put
his
arms
around
her,
and
she
buried
her
face
in
his
chest,
clinging
to
him.
She
shared
her
fears
and
regrets,
and
the
echoes
turned
them
into
mocking
laughter.
Tom
begged
her
to
have
hope
again,
and
she
said
she
couldn't.
He
started
blaming
himself
for
getting
them
into
this
mess,
which
helped
her.
She
said
she
would
try
to
hope
again
and
follow
him
if
he
would
stop
talking
like
that.
She
said
he
wasn't
more
to
blame
than
she
was.
So
they
moved
on
again,
aimlessly,
just
wandering.
All
they
could
do
was
keep
moving.
For
a
little
while,
hope
seemed
to
come
back—not
for
any
real
reason,
but
because
hope
naturally
returns
when
you
aren't
too
used
to
failure.
