idea
came
to
him.
There
were
some
side
passages
nearby.
It
would
be
better
to
explore
them
than
just
wait.
He
took
a
kite-line
from
his
pocket,
tied
it
to
a
rock,
and
he
and
Becky
started
exploring,
Tom
leading
the
way
and
unwinding
the
line
as
they
went.
After
twenty
steps,
the
corridor
ended
with
a
drop.
Tom
got
on
his
knees
and
felt
below,
then
around
the
corner
as
far
as
he
could
reach.
He
tried
to
stretch
further
to
the
right,
and
at
that
moment,
not
twenty
yards
away,
a
human
hand
holding
a
candle
appeared
from
behind
a
rock!
Tom
shouted
with
joy,
and
immediately
the
hand
was
followed
by
the
body
it
belonged
to—Injun
Joe’s!
Tom
was
frozen;
he
couldn’t
move.
He
was
relieved
the
next
moment
to
see
the
“Spaniard”
run
away
and
disappear.
Tom
wondered
why
Joe
hadn’t
recognized
his
voice
and
come
to
hurt
him
for
testifying
in
court.
But
the
echoes
must
have
disguised
his
voice.
That
must
be
it,
he
thought.
Tom’s
fright
made
him
weak.
He
decided
that
if
he
had
enough
strength
to
get
back
to
the
spring,
he
would
stay
there
and
not
risk
meeting
Injun
Joe
again.
He
didn’t
tell
Becky
what
he
had
seen.
He
just
said
he
shouted
“for
luck.”
In
the
end,
hunger
and
misery
became
stronger
than
fear.
After
another
long
wait
at
the
spring
and
another
long
sleep,
things
changed.
The
children
woke
up
very
hungry.
Tom
thought
it
must
be
Wednesday,
Thursday,
or
even
later,
and
that
people
had
stopped
searching
for
them.
He
wanted
to
explore
another
passage.
He
was
ready
to
face
Injun
Joe
and
any
other
dangers.
But
Becky
was
very
weak.
She
felt
hopeless
and
didn't
want
to
move.
She
said
she
would
stay
there
and
wait
to
die;
it
wouldn't
take
long.
She
told
Tom
to
go
with
the
kite-line
and
explore
if
he
wanted,
but
she
begged
him
to
come
back
often
and
talk
to
her.
She
made
him
promise
that
when
the
end
came,
he
would
stay
with
her
and
hold
her
hand
until
it
was
over.
Tom
kissed
her,
feeling
a
lump
in
his
throat,
and
pretended
to
be
sure
they
would
find
the
searchers
or
a
way
out
of
the
cave.
Then
he
took
the
kite-line
and
crawled
down
one
of
the
passages
on
his
hands
and
knees,
feeling
hungry
and
worried
about
what
might
happen.
