Las aventuras de Tom Sawyer
Capítulo 31, Página 8
Neither
could
tell
how
long
it
was
before
Becky
slowly
realized
she
was
crying
in
Tom’s
arms.
All
they
knew
was
that
after
what
seemed
like
forever,
they
both
woke
from
a
deep
sleep
and
faced
their
troubles
again.
Tom
said
it
might
be
Sunday
now—maybe
even
Monday.
He
tried
to
get
Becky
to
talk,
but
her
sadness
was
too
strong,
and
she
had
lost
all
hope.
Tom
said
they
must
have
been
missed
a
long
time
ago,
and
the
search
was
surely
happening.
He
would
shout,
hoping
someone
would
hear.
He
tried,
but
the
echoes
in
the
dark
were
so
scary
that
he
stopped.
Time
passed
slowly,
and
hunger
tormented
them
again.
A
bit
of
Tom’s
half
of
the
cake
was
left;
they
divided
it
and
ate.
But
they
felt
hungrier
than
before.
The
small
piece
of
food
only
made
them
want
more.
After
a
while,
Tom
said:
“Shh!
Did
you
hear
that?”
They
both
held
their
breath
and
listened.
There
was
a
sound
like
a
faint,
far-off
shout.
Tom
answered
it
immediately
and,
holding
Becky’s
hand,
started
moving
towards
the
sound.
Soon
he
listened
again;
the
sound
was
heard
again,
and
it
seemed
a
little
closer.
“It’s
them!”
said
Tom.
“They’re
coming!
Come
on,
Becky—we’ll
be
fine
now!”
The
children
were
almost
overwhelmed
with
joy.
But
they
moved
slowly
because
there
were
many
holes
they
had
to
avoid.
Soon
they
reached
one
and
had
to
stop.
It
could
be
three
feet
deep
or
a
hundred—there
was
no
way
to
cross
it.
Tom
lay
on
his
stomach
and
reached
down
as
far
as
he
could.
No
bottom.
They
had
to
wait
there
for
the
searchers
to
come.
They
listened;
the
shouts
were
growing
more
distant!
A
moment
later,
they
stopped
completely.
The
misery
of
it!
Tom
shouted
until
he
was
hoarse,
but
it
didn’t
help.
He
spoke
hopefully
to
Becky,
but
a
long,
anxious
wait
passed,
and
no
sounds
came
again.
The
children
found
their
way
back
to
the
spring.
Time
dragged
on;
they
slept
again
and
woke
up
hungry
and
sad.
Tom
thought
it
must
be
Tuesday
by
now.
