minutes
later,
the
widow's
guests
were
at
the
dinner
table,
and
a
dozen
children
were
seated
at
small
side
tables
in
the
same
room,
as
was
the
custom
in
that
area
and
time.
At
the
right
moment,
Mr.
Jones
made
his
speech,
thanking
the
widow
for
honoring
him
and
his
sons,
but
he
said
there
was
someone
else
whose
modesty—
And
so
on.
He
revealed
his
secret
about
Huck's
role
in
the
adventure
in
the
most
dramatic
way
he
could,
but
the
surprise
was
mostly
fake
and
not
as
loud
and
excited
as
it
might
have
been
in
better
circumstances.
However,
the
widow
acted
quite
surprised
and
gave
so
many
compliments
and
so
much
gratitude
to
Huck
that
he
almost
forgot
the
discomfort
of
his
new
clothes
in
the
completely
uncomfortable
feeling
of
being
the
center
of
attention
and
praise.
The
widow
said
she
planned
to
give
Huck
a
home
and
have
him
educated;
and
when
she
could
afford
it,
she
would
help
him
start
a
small
business.
Tom
saw
his
chance
and
said:
"Huck
doesn't
need
it.
Huck's
rich."
Only
the
good
manners
of
the
guests
stopped
them
from
laughing
at
what
seemed
like
a
joke.
But
the
silence
was
a
bit
awkward.
Tom
broke
it:
"Huck's
got
money.
Maybe
you
don't
believe
it,
but
he's
got
lots.
Oh,
don't
smile—I
can
prove
it.
Just
wait
a
minute."
Tom
ran
outside.
The
guests
looked
at
each
other
with
puzzled
interest—and
curiously
at
Huck,
who
was
speechless.
"Sid,
what's
wrong
with
Tom?"
Aunt
Polly
asked.
"He—well,
you
can
never
understand
that
boy.
I
never—"
