Las aventuras de Tom Sawyer
Capítulo 4, Página 3
“All
right!
What
is
it,
Mary,
tell
me
what
it
is.”
“Never
you
mind,
Tom.
You
know
if
I
say
it’s
nice,
it
is
nice.”
“You
bet
you
that’s
so,
Mary.
All
right,
I’ll
tackle
it
again.”
And
he
did
“tackle
it
again”—and
with
the
curiosity
and
promise
of
a
reward,
he
worked
with
such
energy
that
he
succeeded.
Mary
gave
him
a
brand-new
“Barlow”
knife
worth
twelve
and
a
half
cents.
The
joy
that
filled
him
was
overwhelming.
True,
the
knife
couldn’t
cut
anything,
but
it
was
a
real
Barlow,
and
that
was
grand.
Tom
used
it
to
scratch
the
cupboard
and
was
planning
to
start
on
the
bureau
when
he
was
called
to
get
ready
for
Sunday-school.
Mary
gave
him
a
tin
basin
of
water
and
some
soap.
He
went
outside,
set
the
basin
on
a
bench,
dipped
the
soap
in
the
water,
and
put
it
down.
He
rolled
up
his
sleeves,
poured
the
water
on
the
ground
gently,
and
went
back
inside
to
wipe
his
face
on
the
towel
behind
the
door.
But
Mary
took
the
towel
away
and
said:
“Now
ain’t
you
ashamed,
Tom.
You
mustn’t
be
so
bad.
Water
won’t
hurt
you.”
Tom
felt
a
bit
embarrassed.
The
basin
was
refilled,
and
this
time
he
stood
over
it
for
a
while,
gathering
courage.
He
took
a
deep
breath
and
began.
When
he
came
back
into
the
kitchen,
with
his
eyes
closed
and
reaching
for
the
towel,
soap
and
water
dripped
from
his
face.
But
when
he
finished
drying,
he
still
wasn’t
clean.
His
face
was
clean
only
up
to
his
chin,
and
below
that
was
still
dirty.
Mary
helped
him,
and
when
she
was
done,
he
was
clean
all
over,
and
his
hair
was
brushed
neatly.
[He
secretly
flattened
his
curls
because
he
thought
they
were
girly,
and
they
bothered
him.]
Then
Mary
got
out
his
Sunday
clothes,
which
he
only
wore
on
Sundays
for
two
years.
She
helped
him
get
dressed,
buttoned
his
jacket
up
to
his
chin,
turned
down
his
shirt
collar,
brushed
him
off,
and
put
his
straw
hat
on
his
head.
He
looked
much
better
but
felt
uncomfortable.
He
hoped
Mary
would
forget
about
his
shoes,
but
she
didn’t.
She
polished
them
with
tallow
and
brought
them
out.
He
got
angry
and
said
he
was
always
made
to
do
things
he
didn’t
want
to
do.
But
Mary
said
kindly:
“Please,
Tom—that’s
a
good
boy.”
