Las aventuras de Tom Sawyer
Capítulo 10, Página 9
“Hucky,
do
you
dare
to
go
if
I
lead?”
“I
don’t
really
want
to,
Tom.
What
if
it’s
Injun
Joe!”
Tom
hesitated.
Yet
soon
the
urge
returned,
and
the
boys
decided
to
try,
agreeing
to
run
if
the
snoring
stopped.
They
tiptoed
down,
one
behind
the
other.
Just
five
steps
from
the
snorer,
Tom
stepped
on
a
stick,
which
snapped
loudly.
The
man
groaned,
shifted
slightly,
and
his
face
appeared
in
the
moonlight.
It
was
Muff
Potter.
The
boys
had
frozen
in
fear,
but
once
the
man
moved,
their
fears
faded.
They
tiptoed
out
through
the
broken
boards
and
stopped
a
short
distance
away
to
exchange
a
final
word.
Suddenly,
a
long,
mournful
howl
rose
into
the
night
air!
They
turned
to
see
a
strange
dog
standing
just
a
few
feet
from
where
Potter
lay,
facing
him
with
its
nose
pointed
upward.
"Oh,
geeminy,
it’s
him!"
both
boys
exclaimed
at
once.
"Hey,
Tom—they
say
a
stray
dog
was
howling
around
Johnny
Miller’s
house
about
midnight,
two
weeks
ago;
and
a
whippoorwill
landed
on
the
banisters
and
sang
that
same
evening;
and
nobody’s
dead
there
yet."
"Well,
I
know
that.
But
what
if
no
one’s
dead?
Didn’t
Gracie
Miller
fall
into
the
kitchen
fire
and
burn
herself
badly
the
very
next
Saturday?"
"Yes,
but
she
isn’t
dead.
And
what’s
more,
she’s
getting
better,
too."
"All
right,
you
wait
and
see.
She’s
doomed,
just
as
sure
as
Muff
Potter
is
doomed.
That’s
what
people
say,
and
they
know
about
these
things,
Huck."
