Las aventuras de Tom Sawyer
Capítulo 10, Página 10
Then
they
parted,
deep
in
thought.
When
Tom
crept
into
his
bedroom
window,
the
night
was
nearly
over.
He
undressed
very
carefully
and
fell
asleep,
pleased
that
no
one
knew
about
his
adventure.
He
didn’t
realize
that
Sid,
who
was
softly
snoring,
had
been
awake
for
an
hour.
When
Tom
woke
up,
Sid
was
already
dressed
and
gone.
The
light
seemed
late,
and
the
atmosphere
felt
different.
He
was
alarmed.
Why
hadn’t
he
been
called
or
bothered
until
he
got
up,
as
usual?
The
thought
filled
him
with
dread.
Within
five
minutes,
he
was
dressed
and
downstairs,
feeling
tired
and
sore.
The
family
was
still
at
the
table,
but
breakfast
was
over.
There
were
no
words
of
scolding;
just
averted
eyes
and
a
silence
that
chilled
Tom’s
heart.
He
sat
down
and
tried
to
appear
cheerful,
but
it
was
hard
work;
it
brought
no
smiles,
no
responses,
and
he
fell
silent,
letting
his
heart
sink.
After
breakfast,
his
aunt
took
him
aside,
and
Tom
almost
felt
hopeful,
thinking
he
might
get
a
whipping;
but
that
wasn’t
the
case.
His
aunt
cried
over
him,
asking
how
he
could
break
her
heart
like
this;
finally,
she
told
him
to
go
ahead
and
ruin
himself
and
bring
her
sorrow
to
the
grave,
as
she
couldn’t
try
anymore.
This
was
worse
than
a
thousand
whippings,
and
Tom’s
heart
ached
more
than
his
body.
He
cried,
begged
for
forgiveness,
promised
to
change
repeatedly,
and
then
left,
feeling
he
had
only
gained
a
partial
forgiveness
and
a
weak
trust.
He
left
feeling
too
miserable
to
even
be
angry
at
Sid;
so
Sid’s
quick
escape
through
the
back
gate
was
unnecessary.
He
trudged
to
school,
gloomy
and
sad,
and
took
his
punishment,
along
with
Joe
Harper,
for
skipping
school
the
day
before,
with
the
demeanor
of
someone
burdened
by
greater
troubles
and
indifferent
to
minor
ones.
Then
he
went
to
his
seat,
rested
his
elbows
on
his
desk,
placed
his
chin
in
his
hands,
and
stared
at
the
wall
with
the
blank
look
of
someone
who
has
reached
the
limit
of
suffering.
His
elbow
pressed
against
something
hard.
After
a
long
time,
he
slowly
and
sadly
shifted
his
position
and
picked
up
the
object
with
a
sigh.
It
was
wrapped
in
paper.
He
unwrapped
it.
A
long,
drawn-out
sigh
followed,
and
his
heart
broke.
It
was
his
brass
andiron
knob!
This
final
straw
was
too
much
to
bear.
