Las aventuras de Tom Sawyer
Capítulo 11, Página 1
Just
before
noon,
the
entire
village
was
shocked
by
the
horrifying
news.
There
was
no
need
for
a
telegraph;
the
story
spread
quickly
from
person
to
person,
group
to
group,
and
house
to
house.
Naturally,
the
schoolmaster
declared
a
holiday
for
the
afternoon;
the
town
would
have
thought
it
odd
if
he
hadn't.
A
bloody
knife
had
been
discovered
near
the
murdered
man,
and
someone
recognized
it
as
belonging
to
Muff
Potter—or
so
the
story
went.
It
was
rumored
that
a
citizen,
out
late,
found
Potter
washing
himself
in
the
stream
around
one
or
two
in
the
morning,
and
Potter
had
quickly
slipped
away—suspicious
behavior,
especially
since
washing
wasn't
typical
for
Potter.
The
town
had
been
searched
thoroughly
for
this
"murderer"
(the
public
is
quick
to
sift
through
evidence
and
reach
a
verdict),
but
he
was
nowhere
to
be
found.
Riders
had
set
out
on
all
roads,
and
the
Sheriff
was
"confident"
that
he
would
be
caught
before
nightfall.
The
entire
town
was
heading
toward
the
graveyard.
Tom's
sadness
disappeared,
and
he
joined
the
procession,
not
because
he
wanted
to,
but
because
an
inexplicable
fascination
pulled
him
there.
When
he
arrived
at
the
dreadful
place,
he
squeezed
his
small
body
through
the
crowd
to
see
the
grim
scene.
It
felt
like
ages
since
he'd
last
been
there.
Someone
pinched
his
arm.
He
turned
and
met
Huckleberry's
eyes.
Both
quickly
looked
away,
wondering
if
anyone
had
noticed
their
exchange.
But
everyone
was
talking,
focused
on
the
macabre
sight
before
them.
"Poor
guy!"
"Poor
young
man!"
"This
should
be
a
lesson
for
grave
robbers!"
"Muff
Potter
will
hang
for
this
if
they
catch
him!"
These
were
the
comments,
and
the
minister
said,
"It
was
a
judgment;
His
hand
is
here."
Tom
shivered
from
head
to
toe
as
his
gaze
fell
on
Injun
Joe's
expressionless
face.
At
that
moment,
the
crowd
began
to
move
and
struggle,
and
voices
shouted,
"It's
him!
It's
him!
He's
coming
himself!"
"Who?
Who?"
came
from
twenty
voices.
"Muff
Potter!"
"Hey,
he's
stopped!—Look
out,
he's
turning!
Don't
let
him
escape!"
