Las aventuras de Tom Sawyer
Capítulo 16, Página 1
After
dinner,
the
whole
group
went
out
to
search
for
turtle
eggs
on
the
sandbar.
They
poked
sticks
into
the
sand,
and
when
they
found
a
soft
spot,
they
knelt
down
and
dug
with
their
hands.
Sometimes
they
would
pull
out
fifty
or
sixty
eggs
from
a
single
hole.
The
eggs
were
perfectly
round,
white,
and
a
bit
smaller
than
an
English
walnut.
That
night,
they
had
a
famous
fried-egg
feast,
and
another
one
on
Friday
morning.
After
breakfast,
they
ran
out
to
the
bar,
shouting
and
playing,
chasing
each
other
around
while
shedding
their
clothes
until
they
were
naked.
They
continued
their
fun
in
the
shallow
water
against
the
strong
current,
which
occasionally
knocked
them
off
their
feet
and
added
to
the
excitement.
Sometimes
they
would
gather
and
splash
water
into
each
other's
faces
with
their
palms,
slowly
getting
closer
with
their
faces
turned
away
to
avoid
the
sprays.
Eventually,
they
grabbed
and
wrestled
each
other
until
the
strongest
ducked
his
neighbor,
and
they
all
ended
up
underwater
in
a
tangle
of
white
legs
and
arms,
coming
up
laughing
and
gasping
for
breath.
When
they
were
exhausted,
they
sprawled
on
the
hot,
dry
sand,
covering
themselves
with
it,
and
eventually
ran
back
into
the
water
to
repeat
the
whole
scene.
It
occurred
to
them
that
their
bare
skin
looked
like
flesh-colored
"tights,"
so
they
drew
a
circle
in
the
sand
and
held
a
circus,
with
three
clowns
in
it,
as
none
of
them
wanted
to
give
up
that
role.
Next,
they
got
their
marbles
and
played
games
like
"knucks,"
"ringtaw,"
and
"keeps"
until
they
got
bored.
Then
Joe
and
Huck
went
for
another
swim,
but
Tom
didn't
join
them.
He
realized
that
when
he
kicked
off
his
trousers,
he
also
lost
his
string
of
rattlesnake
rattles
from
his
ankle,
and
he
wondered
how
he
had
avoided
cramps
without
this
charm.
He
didn't
swim
again
until
he
found
it,
and
by
then,
the
other
boys
were
tired
and
ready
to
rest.
They
drifted
apart,
fell
into
a
gloomy
mood,
and
stared
longingly
across
the
wide
river
at
the
village
dozing
in
the
sun.
Tom
found
himself
writing
"BECKY"
in
the
sand
with
his
toe;
he
erased
it,
angry
at
his
own
weakness.
But
he
wrote
it
again,
unable
to
resist.
He
erased
it
once
more
and
distracted
himself
by
gathering
the
other
boys.
But
Joe's
spirits
had
sunk
so
low
that
it
seemed
impossible
to
revive
them.
He
was
so
homesick
that
he
could
barely
endure
it.
Tears
were
close
to
the
surface.
Huck
felt
down,
too.
Tom
was
also
unhappy
but
tried
hard
not
to
show
it.
He
had
a
secret
he
wasn't
ready
to
reveal
yet,
but
if
this
gloomy
mood
didn't
lift
soon,
he
would
have
to
share
it.
With
forced
cheerfulness,
he
said:
"I
bet
pirates
have
been
on
this
island
before,
guys.
Let's
explore
it
again.
They've
hidden
treasures
here
somewhere.
How
would
you
feel
if
we
found
a
chest
full
of
gold
and
silver?"
But
this
only
sparked
faint
enthusiasm,
which
quickly
faded
without
a
response.
Tom
tried
a
few
more
ideas,
but
they
also
failed.
It
was
disheartening.
Joe
sat
poking
the
sand
with
a
stick,
looking
very
gloomy.
Finally,
he
said:
"Oh,
guys,
let's
give
it
up.
I
want
to
go
home.
It's
so
lonely."
