Las aventuras de Tom Sawyer
Capítulo 18, Página 1
Tom
had
a
big
secret—his
plan
to
come
back
home
with
his
fellow
pirates
and
attend
their
own
funerals.
They
had
floated
over
to
the
Missouri
shore
on
a
log
at
dusk
on
Saturday,
landing
several
miles
below
the
village.
They
slept
in
the
woods
near
the
town
until
almost
dawn
and
then
sneaked
through
back
alleys
to
finish
their
sleep
in
the
church
gallery,
surrounded
by
broken
benches.
On
Monday
morning,
during
breakfast,
Aunt
Polly
and
Mary
were
especially
kind
to
Tom,
paying
close
attention
to
his
needs.
There
was
more
conversation
than
usual.
During
this,
Aunt
Polly
remarked:
"Well,
I
won’t
say
it
wasn’t
a
clever
joke,
Tom,
making
everyone
worry
for
almost
a
week
so
you
boys
could
have
fun.
But
it’s
a
shame
you
could
be
so
unfeeling
as
to
let
me
suffer.
If
you
could
cross
over
on
a
log
to
attend
your
funeral,
you
could
have
come
over
and
given
me
a
hint
that
you
weren’t
dead,
just
ran
away."
"Yes,
you
could
have
done
that,
Tom,"
Mary
added,
"and
I
believe
you
would
have
if
you’d
thought
of
it."
"Would
you,
Tom?"
Aunt
Polly
asked,
her
face
hopeful.
"Tell
me,
would
you
have,
if
you’d
thought
of
it?"
"I—well,
I
don’t
know.
It
would’ve
ruined
everything."
"Tom,
I
hoped
you
loved
me
enough
for
that,"
Aunt
Polly
said,
her
voice
filled
with
disappointment,
unsettling
Tom.
"It
would
have
meant
something
if
you’d
cared
enough
to
think
of
it,
even
if
you
didn’t
do
it."
"Now,
auntie,
it’s
no
harm,"
Mary
pleaded.
"It’s
just
Tom’s
reckless
way—he’s
always
in
such
a
hurry
that
he
doesn’t
think
of
anything."
