Las aventuras de Tom Sawyer
Capítulo 18, Página 10
“Yes.”
“And
me?”
said
Sally
Rogers.
“Yes.”
“Me
too?”
Susy
Harper
asked.
“And
Joe?”
“Yes.”
The
requests
continued,
with
everyone
clapping
in
excitement,
except
for
Tom
and
Amy.
Then
Tom
coolly
turned
away,
still
chatting,
and
took
Amy
with
him.
Becky’s
lips
trembled,
and
tears
filled
her
eyes.
She
masked
her
feelings
with
forced
cheerfulness
and
kept
talking,
but
the
joy
of
the
picnic
had
vanished.
She
left
as
soon
as
she
could,
hid
herself
away,
and
had
what
is
known
as
“a
good
cry.”
Then
she
sat
in
a
gloomy
mood,
her
pride
hurt,
until
the
bell
rang.
She
got
up
with
a
determined
look
in
her
eye,
shaking
her
braids,
and
decided
she
knew
what
she
would
do.
During
recess,
Tom
continued
his
flirtation
with
Amy,
feeling
very
pleased
with
himself.
He
wandered
around,
hoping
to
find
Becky
and
make
her
feel
bad
with
his
antics.
Finally,
he
saw
her,
but
his
spirits
dropped
instantly.
She
was
cozily
sitting
on
a
bench
behind
the
schoolhouse,
looking
at
a
picture
book
with
Alfred
Temple.
They
were
so
engrossed,
with
their
heads
close
together,
that
they
seemed
unaware
of
anything
else.
Jealousy
burned
through
Tom.
He
regretted
not
accepting
the
chance
Becky
had
offered
to
make
up.
He
called
himself
a
fool
and
many
other
names.
He
wanted
to
cry
out
of
frustration.
Amy
chatted
happily
as
they
walked,
her
heart
light,
but
Tom
was
too
distracted
to
respond
properly.
He
didn’t
hear
her
words,
and
when
she
paused,
he
could
only
offer
awkward
replies,
often
misplaced.
He
kept
drifting
back
to
the
schoolhouse
to
torment
himself
with
the
sight.
He
couldn’t
help
it.
It
infuriated
him
to
think
that
Becky
didn’t
even
notice
he
existed.
But
she
did
see,
and
she
felt
victorious,
glad
to
see
him
suffer
as
she
had.
Amy’s
cheerful
talk
became
unbearable.
Tom
hinted
at
things
he
needed
to
do,
urgent
matters,
but
she
kept
talking.
He
thought,
“Oh,
will
I
ever
get
rid
of
her?”
Finally,
he
insisted
he
had
to
go,
and
she
innocently
said
she’d
be
around
after
school.
He
hurried
off,
annoyed
with
her.
