Las aventuras de Tom Sawyer
Capítulo 18, Página 11
“Any
other
boy!”
Tom
thought,
grinding
his
teeth.
“Anyone
in
town
but
that
Saint
Louis
snob
who
thinks
he’s
so
fancy!
Oh,
fine,
I
beat
you
the
first
day
you
came
here,
and
I’ll
do
it
again!
Just
wait
till
I
catch
you
alone!
I’ll
just
take
and—”
He
mimicked
fighting
an
imaginary
boy,
punching
the
air
and
kicking.
“Oh,
you
give
up,
do
you?
Now,
let
that
teach
you!”
He
finished
his
imaginary
fight
with
satisfaction.
Tom
rushed
home
at
noon.
He
couldn’t
handle
more
of
Amy’s
gratitude
or
his
own
jealousy.
Becky
continued
looking
at
pictures
with
Alfred,
but
as
time
passed
and
Tom
didn’t
return
to
suffer,
her
triumph
faded.
She
became
disinterested,
then
somber.
She
listened
for
footsteps,
hoping
it
was
Tom,
but
it
never
was.
Eventually,
she
felt
miserable
and
regretted
taking
things
so
far.
When
Alfred,
trying
to
keep
her
attention,
exclaimed,
“Oh,
here’s
a
fun
one!
Look
at
this!”
she
lost
patience
and
snapped,
“Oh,
don’t
bother
me!
I
don’t
care!”
She
burst
into
tears
and
walked
away.
Alfred
followed,
wanting
to
comfort
her,
but
she
said:
“Leave
me
alone!
I
hate
you!”
The
boy
stopped,
confused
about
what
he’d
done
wrong,
as
she
had
agreed
to
look
at
pictures
all
through
lunch.
She
walked
away,
crying.
Alfred
went
into
the
empty
schoolhouse,
feeling
humiliated
and
angry.
He
realized
Becky
had
used
him
to
spite
Tom
Sawyer.
This
didn’t
make
him
dislike
Tom
any
less.
He
wished
he
could
get
Tom
in
trouble
with
little
risk
to
himself.
Then
he
saw
Tom’s
spelling
book.
Here
was
his
chance.
He
opened
it
to
the
afternoon
lesson
and
poured
ink
on
the
page.
Becky,
peeking
through
a
window,
saw
this
but
didn’t
reveal
herself.
She
headed
home,
planning
to
find
Tom
and
tell
him.
Tom
would
be
grateful,
and
they
could
make
up.
But
halfway
home,
she
changed
her
mind.
She
remembered
how
Tom
treated
her
when
she
talked
about
the
picnic
and
felt
ashamed.
She
decided
to
let
him
get
punished
for
the
ruined
spelling
book
and
resolved
to
hate
him
forever.
