Las aventuras de Tom Sawyer
Capítulo 22, Página 1
Tom
joined
the
Cadets
of
Temperance,
drawn
by
their
flashy
uniforms.
He
promised
not
to
smoke,
chew
tobacco,
or
swear
while
he
was
a
member.
Soon,
he
discovered
that
making
such
promises
only
made
him
want
to
break
them
more.
He
was
tormented
by
a
strong
desire
to
drink
and
swear,
and
only
the
hope
of
wearing
his
red
sash
kept
him
from
quitting.
As
the
Fourth
of
July
approached,
he
abandoned
that
hope,
having
lasted
less
than
two
days,
and
pinned
his
hopes
on
old
Judge
Frazer,
who
seemed
on
his
deathbed
and
would
have
a
large
public
funeral
due
to
his
high
position.
For
three
days,
Tom
was
deeply
concerned
about
the
Judge’s
condition,
eagerly
seeking
updates.
Sometimes,
his
hopes
soared
so
high
that
he
would
practice
wearing
his
regalia
in
front
of
the
mirror.
But
the
Judge
kept
improving,
first
being
declared
on
the
mend
and
then
convalescent.
Tom
was
frustrated
and
felt
wronged.
He
resigned
immediately,
and
that
night,
the
Judge
suffered
a
relapse
and
died.
Tom
decided
never
to
trust
someone
like
that
again.
The
funeral
was
impressive.
The
Cadets
marched
in
a
way
that
would
make
any
former
member
envious.
Tom
was
free
again,
and
there
was
something
freeing
about
that.
Now
he
could
drink
and
swear,
but
to
his
surprise,
he
no
longer
wanted
to.
The
mere
fact
that
he
could
do
it
took
away
the
desire.
Tom
soon
realized
that
the
vacation
he
had
longed
for
was
starting
to
feel
a
bit
dull.
He
tried
keeping
a
diary,
but
nothing
happened
for
three
days,
so
he
gave
it
up.
The
first
negro
minstrel
show
came
to
town,
causing
a
stir.
Tom
and
Joe
Harper
formed
their
own
band
of
performers
and
were
happy
for
two
days.
Even
the
Fourth
of
July
was
somewhat
disappointing
because
it
rained
heavily,
canceling
the
parade.
The
greatest
man
in
the
world,
as
Tom
thought,
Mr.
Benton,
a
real
United
States
Senator,
was
a
letdown—he
wasn’t
even
close
to
being
twenty-five
feet
tall.
A
circus
came
to
town.
The
boys
played
circus
for
three
days
afterward
in
tents
made
from
old
rugs,
charging
three
pins
for
boys
and
two
for
girls
as
admission,
but
soon
abandoned
the
game.
A
phrenologist
and
a
mesmerizer
visited
and
left,
making
the
village
feel
even
duller
than
before.
