Las aventuras de Tom Sawyer
Capítulo 22, Página 2
There
were
a
few
boys-and-girls’
parties,
but
they
were
so
rare
and
enjoyable
that
the
time
between
them
felt
even
emptier.
Becky
Thatcher
had
gone
to
her
home
in
Constantinople
to
stay
with
her
parents
during
vacation,
leaving
no
bright
spots
in
Tom's
life.
The
terrible
secret
of
the
murder
was
a
constant
source
of
misery
for
Tom.
It
felt
like
a
painful,
permanent
affliction.
Then
Tom
caught
the
measles.
For
two
long
weeks,
Tom
lay
in
bed,
cut
off
from
the
world
and
uninterested
in
anything.
When
he
finally
recovered
and
ventured
downtown,
he
found
everything
changed.
A
religious
revival
had
swept
through,
and
everyone
had
“got
religion,”
not
just
the
adults
but
the
children
too.
Tom
searched
for
a
familiar,
sinful
face
but
was
met
with
disappointment
everywhere.
He
found
Joe
Harper
studying
a
Testament
and
turned
away
sadly.
He
found
Ben
Rogers
visiting
the
poor
with
religious
tracts.
Jim
Hollis
pointed
out
the
lesson
he
should
take
from
his
recent
illness.
Every
boy
he
met
added
to
his
gloom;
when
he
finally
sought
refuge
with
Huckleberry
Finn
and
was
greeted
with
a
Bible
verse,
his
heart
sank.
He
went
home,
realizing
he
was
the
only
one
in
town
who
was
lost.
That
night,
a
fierce
storm
broke
out
with
heavy
rain,
thunder,
and
lightning.
Tom
hid
under
his
covers,
terrified,
convinced
that
the
storm
was
a
punishment
for
him.
He
felt
he
had
tested
the
patience
of
higher
powers
to
their
limit,
and
this
was
the
result.
It
seemed
excessive
to
use
such
a
grand
storm
to
punish
someone
like
him,
but
it
didn’t
feel
out
of
place
to
Tom.
Eventually,
the
storm
passed
without
achieving
its
purpose.
Tom’s
first
instinct
was
to
be
thankful
and
change
his
ways.
His
second
was
to
wait
and
see—there
might
not
be
another
storm.
The
next
day,
the
doctors
returned;
Tom
had
relapsed.
He
spent
three
more
weeks
in
bed,
which
felt
like
an
eternity.
When
he
finally
got
outside,
he
felt
little
gratitude
for
being
spared,
remembering
how
lonely
and
friendless
he
was.
He
wandered
down
the
street
and
found
Jim
Hollis
acting
as
a
judge
in
a
trial
where
a
cat
was
accused
of
murdering
a
bird.
He
found
Joe
Harper
and
Huck
Finn
in
an
alley,
eating
a
stolen
melon.
Poor
boys!
Like
Tom,
they
had
also
relapsed.
