Las aventuras de Tom Sawyer
Capítulo 24, Página 1
Tom
was
once
again
a
shining
hero—the
darling
of
the
old
and
the
envy
of
the
young.
His
name
even
made
it
into
the
village
paper,
which
praised
him
highly.
Some
people
believed
he
might
become
President,
if
he
didn’t
end
up
getting
hanged
first.
As
usual,
the
unpredictable
world
embraced
Muff
Potter
warmly,
just
as
easily
as
it
had
mistreated
him
before.
But
this
kind
of
behavior
speaks
well
of
the
world,
so
it's
not
something
to
criticize.
Tom’s
days
were
filled
with
glory
and
excitement,
but
his
nights
were
full
of
terror.
Injun
Joe
haunted
all
his
dreams,
always
with
a
menacing
look.
Almost
no
temptation
could
make
Tom
go
out
after
dark.
Poor
Huck
felt
the
same
fear
and
misery
because
Tom
had
told
the
whole
story
to
the
lawyer
the
night
before
the
trial.
Huck
was
terrified
that
his
part
in
the
matter
might
be
revealed,
even
though
Injun
Joe’s
escape
had
spared
him
from
testifying
in
court.
Huck
had
made
the
attorney
promise
to
keep
his
secret,
but
what
did
that
matter?
Since
Tom’s
troubled
conscience
had
driven
him
to
the
lawyer’s
house
at
night
to
reveal
a
dreadful
tale,
despite
having
sworn
to
secrecy,
Huck’s
trust
in
people
was
nearly
destroyed.
Every
day,
Muff
Potter’s
gratitude
made
Tom
glad
he
had
spoken
up;
but
every
night,
he
wished
he
had
kept
quiet.
Half
the
time,
Tom
feared
Injun
Joe
would
never
be
caught;
the
other
half,
he
feared
he
would
be.
He
was
convinced
he
could
never
breathe
safely
again
until
that
man
was
dead
and
he
had
seen
the
body.
Rewards
were
offered,
and
the
countryside
was
searched,
but
Injun
Joe
was
nowhere
to
be
found.
One
of
those
all-knowing
and
impressive
figures,
a
detective,
came
from
St.
Louis,
snooped
around,
shook
his
head,
looked
wise,
and
achieved
the
kind
of
remarkable
success
typical
of
his
profession.
That
is
to
say,
he
“found
a
clue.”
But
you
can’t
hang
a
“clue”
for
murder,
so
after
the
detective
finished
and
went
home,
Tom
felt
just
as
unsafe
as
before.
The
slow
days
passed
by,
each
one
leaving
behind
a
slightly
lighter
feeling
of
fear.
