Las aventuras de Tom Sawyer
Capítulo 29, Página 1
On
Friday
morning,
Tom
was
thrilled
to
hear
that
Judge
Thatcher’s
family
had
returned
to
town
the
previous
night.
For
a
moment,
both
Injun
Joe
and
the
treasure
became
less
important,
as
Becky
captured
his
full
attention.
He
met
up
with
her,
and
they
had
a
great
time
playing
games
like
“hispy”
and
“gully-keeper”
with
their
school
friends.
The
day
ended
perfectly
when
Becky
convinced
her
mother
to
finally
schedule
the
long-awaited
picnic
for
the
next
day.
Becky
was
overjoyed,
and
Tom
was
just
as
excited.
Invitations
were
sent
out
before
sunset,
and
soon
the
village
kids
were
buzzing
with
excitement
and
anticipation.
Tom
was
so
thrilled
that
he
stayed
awake
late,
hoping
to
hear
Huck’s
signal,
so
he
could
surprise
Becky
and
the
others
with
the
treasure
the
next
day.
However,
no
signal
came
that
night.
Morning
eventually
arrived,
and
by
ten
or
eleven
o’clock,
a
lively
and
cheerful
group
gathered
at
Judge
Thatcher’s
house,
ready
to
set
off.
It
wasn’t
customary
for
older
people
to
attend
picnics,
as
the
children
were
considered
safe
under
the
care
of
a
few
young
ladies
and
gentlemen
in
their
late
teens
and
early
twenties.
The
old
steam
ferry-boat
was
hired
for
the
occasion,
and
soon
the
merry
crowd
moved
up
the
main
street,
carrying
baskets
of
food.
Sid
was
unwell
and
had
to
miss
out,
while
Mary
stayed
home
to
look
after
him.
The
last
thing
Mrs.
Thatcher
said
to
Becky
was:
“You
won’t
be
back
until
late.
Maybe
you
should
stay
overnight
with
one
of
the
girls
who
live
near
the
ferry-landing,
dear.”
“Then
I’ll
stay
with
Susy
Harper,
mom.”
“All
right.
Just
behave
yourself
and
don’t
cause
any
trouble.”
As
they
walked
along,
Tom
said
to
Becky:
“Hey,
I’ve
got
an
idea.
Instead
of
going
to
Joe
Harper’s,
let’s
climb
the
hill
and
stop
at
Widow
Douglas’.
She
always
has
ice
cream!
Loads
of
it.
She’ll
be
really
happy
to
have
us
over.”
“Oh,
that
sounds
like
fun!”
