Las aventuras de Tom Sawyer
Capítulo 31, Página 1
Now
let's
turn
back
to
Tom
and
Becky's
part
in
the
picnic.
They
wandered
through
the
dim
paths
with
the
others,
exploring
the
familiar
wonders
of
the
cave.
These
wonders
had
grand
names
like
"The
Drawing-Room,"
"The
Cathedral,"
and
"Aladdin's
Palace."
Soon,
a
game
of
hide-and-seek
began,
and
Tom
and
Becky
joined
with
enthusiasm
until
they
grew
a
bit
tired.
They
then
drifted
down
a
winding
passage,
holding
their
candles
high,
reading
the
tangled
web
of
names,
dates,
addresses,
and
mottos
written
in
candle
smoke
on
the
rocky
walls.
As
they
moved
on,
they
hardly
noticed
they
had
entered
a
part
of
the
cave
without
these
markings.
They
wrote
their
names
in
smoke
under
a
ledge
and
continued.
Eventually,
they
reached
a
spot
where
a
small
stream
trickled
over
a
ledge,
leaving
behind
a
lace-like
stone
formation.
Tom
squeezed
behind
it
to
show
Becky,
discovering
a
steep
natural
stairway
hidden
behind.
The
urge
to
discover
something
new
took
hold
of
him.
Becky
answered
his
call,
and
they
marked
their
path
with
smoke
for
guidance,
beginning
their
exploration.
They
twisted
and
turned
deep
into
the
cave's
secret
recesses,
making
another
mark
before
branching
out
to
find
new
sights
to
share
with
the
outside
world.
At
one
point,
they
found
a
large
cavern
with
countless
shining
stalactites
hanging
from
the
ceiling,
each
as
thick
and
long
as
a
man's
leg.
They
wandered
around,
admiring
it,
then
left
through
one
of
the
many
passages.
Soon,
they
came
upon
a
beautiful
spring,
its
basin
coated
with
glittering
crystals.
It
was
in
a
cavern
with
walls
supported
by
fantastic
pillars,
formed
by
the
joining
of
stalactites
and
stalagmites
over
centuries
of
dripping
water.
High
above,
thousands
of
bats
clustered
together.
The
light
disturbed
them,
and
they
flew
down
in
swarms,
squeaking
and
darting
at
the
candles.
Tom
knew
the
danger
and
quickly
grabbed
Becky's
hand,
guiding
her
into
the
first
corridor
they
found.
They
escaped
just
in
time,
as
a
bat
knocked
out
Becky's
light.
The
bats
chased
them
for
a
while,
but
the
children
kept
diving
into
new
passages
until
they
were
safe.
Tom
soon
discovered
a
subterranean
lake
stretching
into
the
shadows.
He
wanted
to
explore
its
edges
but
decided
to
rest
first.
For
the
first
time,
the
deep
silence
of
the
cave
weighed
heavily
on
their
spirits.
Becky
remarked:
"I
didn't
realize
it,
but
it
feels
like
ages
since
I
heard
anyone
else."
"Now
that
I
think
about
it,
Becky,
we're
far
below
them—and
I
don't
know
how
far
north,
south,
east,
or
whatever
direction
we
are.
We
wouldn't
hear
them
from
here."
Becky
began
to
feel
uneasy.
"I
wonder
how
long
we've
been
down
here,
Tom?
We
should
probably
head
back."
"Yes,
I
guess
we
should.
Probably
a
good
idea."
"Can
you
find
the
way,
Tom?
Everything
looks
so
confusing
to
me."
